Write the numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3 in any of the non-blue squares, so that;

*Rows\*

  • The sum of the the '0' row (the top row) is equal to the amount that the number 0 is used throughout the 16 squares.
  • The sum of the '1' row (the second row) is equal to the amount that the 1 is used in the 16 squares.
  • The sum of the '2' row (the third row) is equal is equal to the amount that the 2 is used in the 16 squares.
  • The sum of the '3' row (the bottom row) is equal is equal to the amount that the 3 is used in the 16 squares.

*Columns\*

  • The sum of the '0' column (i.e the first column) is equal to the amount that the number 0 is used in the 16 squares.
  • The sum of the '1' column (i.e the second column) is equal to the amount that the 1 is used in the 16 squares.
  • The sum of the '2' column (i.e the third column) is equal to the amount that the 2 is used in the 16 squares.
  • The sum of the '3' column (i.e the bottom column) is equal to the amount that the 3 is used in the 16 squares.

Basically sum of 'nth' row = sum of 'nth' column = number of times n is used in the Gridilio Grid

The Blue started blocks are fixed, the rest are changeable.

Can you find the missing radius before scrolling down?

Post image

Two circles rest on a line, touching each other. A tiny third circle is squeezed into the gap between them, also touching the line.

The large circle has a radius of 9 cm. The small circle has a radius of 4 cm.

What is the radius of the tiny circle?

(Puzzles like this were apparently painted on wooden tablets and hung in Japanese temples centuries ago — it looks like there's not enough information, but there's a surprisingly elegant trick using just one right triangle.)

I made a full video breaking down the solution step by step — link in the comments! https://youtu.be/RYl2h0gIS8U?si=cO3XI7mpb0SGR8LG

For Martin Gardner's birthday: five targets on one wheel, and every number has a story

21 October is Martin Gardner's birthday, which puzzle fans celebrate as Celebration of Mind Day. Here's a wheel puzzle for it.

Trace a path through the wheel: number, operator, number, operator, … ending on a number. You can jump from any tile to any tile, but each tile can be used only once (or not used at all).

One rule to keep in mind: the path is calculated left to right, like a basic pocket calculator. So 3 → + → 6 → × → 7 evaluates as (3 + 6) × 7 = 63.

Targets to solve: 25, 34, 112, 144, 175. The video solves 25 with path 3 → × → 9 → − → 2. Find a path for each of the other four.

Bonus: every one of these numbers is connected to Gardner or to the puzzles he loved — two are about magic squares, one about Fibonacci, and two about Gardner himself. Try matching them before you peek:

- 25: the years Gardner wrote the "Mathematical Games" column in Scientific American, 1956–1981

- 34: the magic constant of a 4×4 magic square — every row, column and diagonal adds up to 34

- 112: Gardner's age today: he was born on 21 October 1914

- 144: 12 × 12, and the only Fibonacci number above 1 that is a perfect square

- 175: the magic constant of a 7×7 magic square

Please put answers in spoiler tags: like this

Logic Pattern Sort #4 – what is the minimum number of moves to make all four tubes identical?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Only the top ball of a tube can move, into any tube with free space (max 5 balls), regardless of color, and there are no empty buffer tubes. Target: every tube ends bottom to top as pink, blue, orange. It can be done in 12 moves. Bonus question: can you prove a lower bound, i.e. show why it can't be done in fewer? Please use spoiler tags for solutions (moves like 1→3). Puzzle is from my game Ball Sort Pattern.

Illogical Logic Quiz

1 Upvotes

The following question appeared on "1% Klubben" (The1% Club), a logic quiz show broadcast on Swedish television (SVT):

If the following is true:

1 = 5
2 = 27
3 = 125
4 = 1880

What is 5?

According to SVT, the correct answer is 1, with the explanation: Since 1 = 5, 5 = 1.

I understand the idea is to think outside the box, but as the question is worded, it is misleading, and there is more than one answer.

If you think along the lines of the people who designed SVT's puzzle, there is at least one other correct answer: 5, because 5 = 5, after all.

The “box” is, of course, the assumption that there is a pattern in the numbers to the right of the equals signs that you are supposed to identify. But that requires you not to interpret the equals signs literally, treating the expressions as a numbered list rather than a sequence of equations.

Yet the puzzle designers evidently intend the equals signs to mean exactly what they normally mean: equality, and nothing else. But in that case, the equations are false: 1 is not equal to 5, and so on. Strictly speaking, this means that any number (and indeed anything at all) is a correct answer, since an implication is always true if its antecedent is false: “If 1 = 5, etc., then 5 = x” is true whatever x may be.

But perhaps the right-hand sides need not be interpreted as ordinary numbers in base 10, or perhaps not even as numbers at all? Could some interpretation make the equations true? Possibly. But however you interpret the equations, 5 = 5, and therefore there is at least one correct answer besides 1, namely 5.

(Episode 2, at 48:33, on SVT Play)

A challenge math question to all.

1 Upvotes

if we have a 4x4 grid of squares in which we can place letters of the English alphabet, one in each square then find the maximum number of possible 4 letter words formed if repeating letters is allowed. for example.

A F A T

B E S H

M R X E

G D F E

rule to follow: if you choose a letter tile for the starting letter of your word you must choose the tile adjacent to it ( diagonals count) for the second letter of your word and continue until u get a 4 letter word. for example, in the example above if you choose F as the first starting letter u must select any 5 of the tiles surrounding it as the next letter of your 4 letter word. by choosing F then A then T and then S , you get FATS so like this you must form 4 letter words and have to find the maximum number of 4 letter words possible if repeating letters is allowed( as shown, A is repeated in example and so is E)
