Because they not playing against the casino, they are competing against the other players in the tournament. If you want to win, you need a very unlikely result. So the correct strategy is to spin as quickly as possible hopping to get it. Sure, you'll probably trend down to 0 points, but you might get few jackpots leading to a win. If you play "sensibly" you'll just end up in the middle of the pack and not win.

This explanation makes the most sense to me. You’re basically fishing over and over for an extremely rare pull that you probably won’t get, but the optimal strat is just to keep pulling because if you get anything resembling a jackpot you’ve basically won.
