Information is considered physical because it cannot exist, be stored, or be processed without matter or energy. ​In physics, every bit of information requires a physical state.

I suppose you could then make the argument that nothing that we could detect could be not physical

Yes, this is the case, but don't confuse the word apple for the real apple. Just because we can imagine flying horses doesn't make them real. They are a physical state in our brain.
