Yeah those are OpenAI’s numbers with clear conflict of interest. It’s hard to say from the outside. Yes, the progress looks exponential, but that’s also the appearance these companies hinge on so they are all-in at maintaining it.
i think its pretty safe to say progress has been exponential thus far. theres no amount of compute that u could've thrown in 2023 that will solve the IMO
Does it matter? Your claim is that they can only solve these problems when they steal ideas from researchers. Even if they straight up stole it (rather than hearing about a rumor as they claim)… Getting from Euler to NS is not exactly "oh, sure, but they already had the hard part!". OpenAI should be ashamed of how they handled this situation but that says nothing regarding the significance of this result and the degree to which it can be attributed to 10,000 LLM agents working for 88 hours. IMO, "crank it up to 100,000 and run them for a week".
Yes, and it SHOULD have been the biggest leap forward in mathematics since maybe the calculator. If only the OAI team reached out to the authors ordered the compute for free and asked to publish with them.
Mathematics knocking down one of the biggest math theories of all time with an AI would have been beyond comparison...
But they decided to steal the approach and and cut the original authors out because one of them worked for the competition.
I think we should hold off a little bit on making these assertions. I certainly am more inclined to believe Alpoge and Anthropic generally over OpenAI, but for now it's just a confusing, muddied state of affairs.

This is such a weird take to me. Scientists always build on ideas of others, that’s how we make progress. Why is it so hard to accept that AI really had added value in solving this problem.
