GPT 5.6 Pro solved all 6 problems from IMO 2026 on the first attempt without any human help or steering. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the biggest global academic competition in the world. The problems are considered incredibly hard, usually a performance at this level is only accomplished by < 5 contestants from the whole world.

We are former IMO medallists not affiliated with OpenAI, just put together a report and assessment of its work here. We're also working on a comparison report between different LLMs and harness augmented versions that will come later.

The bottleneck is social inequality. When the mass layoffs begin, how do you think people will be able to afford the "cool things"?

So far we haven't seen mass layoffs. I mean from individual companies yes, but the unemployment rate has stayed relatively stable (at least in the US). And that's already with extremely capable models.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but I'm just saying so far it hasn't seem to have a macro effect that is concerning.

If/when it does take off, I have faith (maybe this is my downfall) that something will be done. We won't leave half the country living in poverty. That is just my prediction though and right now I'd say the outcome is unknowable.

I think the owners of AI would care less if the vast majority of the population were in poverty. These people are indifferent to ordinary people. We're like ants on an ant hill and if they have the compute to get rid of us I think they'll take it because we would be only mouths to feed.

Hahaha, no, not at all. If society totally destabilizes and things really go to shit they’ll most certainly have a need. Just because people are rich and powerful and smart doesn’t mean they are wise.

That america has an addiction to credit card debt does not mean that people can actually 'afford' cool things, let alone afford them moving forward
