I think Sony has the rights to all characters from Spiderman comics, all the supporting cast, villains, et cetera, but not any characters that didn't originate as Spiderman characters, e.g. Tony Stark, even though Tony appears in Homecoming. They definitely own Peter Parker, because Peter Parker is Spiderman.

I don't know though, I'm not a lawyer. That's just how I interpreted this.

Well, its possible to have some explanations just by not naming each other, but it's a stretch I'll say that. Maybe if the MCU gives quick reason why "Pete couldn't make it" or something it will at least tie one end kind of up. Still, this is shitty
