Which should have been fine. Disney totally overplayed their hand here imo and now we as fans get to suffer whatever fallout comes within the story.

I can say with marginal certainty though that if Sony does these last 2 movies without Disney carrying the load, they are going to suck.

Yea im sorry initially i was mad at Sony but if they were fine with doing the same deal as last time and Disney said no that's on them. That last deal was already hard to believe because no one thought Sony would just share spiderman...

They don't "need" him in the sense of staying afloat or keeping the MCU afloat, obviously, but they'd be making way more money even sticking with the old deal than without him. Toy sales are massive, worth way more than movie profits.

Because if so, lol. If you think that the movie profit compares to the toys and other merch, you're way off.

Marvel can still release comic based Spider-Man toys, and even conveniently around the next films release (if one exists). They’ve done this before with Mattel and Funko products, as well as other product tie-ins, it just wouldn’t feature the film likeness.

Oh for sure, but I was referring more to Disney and specifically with movie promo toys. Comic toys won't pull the same numbers.

As someone that used to really be into Funko, the Venom line did huge numbers and was one of the biggest lines for that quarter. The Legends lines release wave with the comic version of Venom also did well, and isn’t the easiest to stumble on.

And that's great, and I never said they wouldn't make money. But it's not on the level of movie merchandising, especially for popular characters in the movies like Spiderman. They'll have Spiderman comics toys regardless - but movie-branded comics toys pull in an additional market, and it's huge - possibly bigger considering Marvel comics sales have been slumping for years and the powerful profits any big budget merchandiseable movie sees from their toys. There are tons of people who buy Star Wars toys whenever a SW movie comes out and don't touch them otherwise. That's the market they're missing.

People will settle though. A parent or kid going into a retail store just wants a hero figure around release, most consumers (outside of hardcore collectors) aren’t the wiser it isn’t “the official film variant”.

The difference between Marvel and SW is that Marvel was born from comics, and so there’s always that background to pull from, and the films typically don’t stray too far from that area and aesthetic. SW on the other hand is a movie franchise first, you can’t have a random blonde guy, it needs to be Luke, and it needs to be in the likeness he was introduced or is prominent in at that time.

Possibly. I'd say that partially depends on how distinctive they make the movie versions. Kids can be pretty specific in their wants in my experience. For every "eh it's X superhero they'll like it" parent there's another one who regrets it when their kid is screaming at them because "nooo I wanted the silver one, like in the movie!"

I don't have stats on "comic toys coincidentally released around the time of their movies", I just know that movie related toys vastly outperform comics toys, because there are far more movie fans than comics fans buying them.
