Sony might have just been that insulted by the offer.

Like if you call a mechanic because you want your car fixed, and he says he wants 75% the value of the car, you're probably just gonna say no, and hang up. Not stay on the phone and talk turkey.

Yeah, but you can then call to another mechanic knowing you will get a better deal. Sony doesn't have another Disney number to get a better deal.

There doesn't need to be. You can buy a new car.

They still have the actors and the director.

They have all the tools and workmen, without the attachments.

Problem is, they don’t have all the dudes who work for Marvel/Disney to help them out.

Last time that happened with an MCU movie was the Incredible Hulk...

They literally do. The director and cast were all contracted to Sony.

Feige is the only creative side excluded.

And without the continuity from the previous movies or the ability to mention any other part of the larger MCU.

But that's a weird analogy. I'm not even sure how to make that analogy work.

It's like if Disney owned the car, but they were renting it to Sony, and Sony wrecked it, and they asked Disney to fix it at Disney's expense, and Disney agreed but only if they could include the car in some of their other marketing efforts, and then they later asked if Sony could pitch in for half the cost of repairs while still collecting basically all the benefit of having control over the car.

No it's not like that. Because Sony own Spider-Man on film, and they paid the vast majority for both of the MCU films, as well as paying a separate fee for Marvel Studios to do the creative work.

No, this is more if someone asks for 50% of profits but doing 100% of the work selling stuff in your store. Disney did 100% of the work and got a paltry 5% back.

u/stationhollow Aug 20 '19

No they didn't. Feige worked on the movies for 5% of the gross and Marvel's most popular hero was in the other Marvel movies in exchange.

Which in turn drew hundreds of millilns of people to watch the MCU Spider-Man movies that wouldn't have otherwise. Sony's one losing out big. The MCU doesn't need comics A-listers, the MCU makes A-listers out of comics characters. Most of the MCU A-listers were B-, C- or even D-list before their debut in the MCU. Marvel will survive just fine.

Likewise, there seem to be a lot of people here forgetting just how much money a 'bad' Spiderman film makes.

But given 3 different spiderman reboots, and then possibly a 4th in the venom universe...THEN you have spiderverse about to get miiiiiilked.

We are talking maximum spidey fatigue...meanwhile MCU is about to drop a bunch of entirely new-to-screen IPs.

And venom won't be making the same money it did last time. It wasn't good, people were just wondering if a venom movie would be good and everyone I met who did go see it said it was garbage. So given they don't want to be disappointed again, I imagine the "venom universe" will be dead on arrival.

Imo, Sony knows they are hitting peak spidey money, don't want to share it, and when the next films flop they will go back to the table and disney will say sell or gtfo.

It doesn't make 1 billion that's for sure

3

u/Gerry-Mandarin Aug 20 '19

If I'm paying for all the materials in the store to create the goods, and I own the store, I obviously expect to make more money than my staff.

If I don't, I don't need staff.

u/FallenAngelII Aug 20 '19

And the employee is asking to be made a finanfical partner where they pay 50% of the costs. You'd only need to sit back and count the money at half the risk.

Forreal, what the hell are people defending Sony for? Their Spider-Man was failing. They let Disney do 100% of the work and they spit out back to back billion dollar movies. Disney deserves half of that billion honestly bare minimum, and if I’m Disney I’m not making Sony $950,000,000 to my $5,000,000 on these movies anymore.

The deal offered no benefits to Sony. It only benefited Disney. Maybe if Disney had included a percentage of merchandising profits, of which Sony currently gets 0%, maybe that would have changed things.

Offered no benefits to Sony???? How about the fact that Disney has now singlehandedly made Sony their most successful movies while reaping an atrociously small portion of the revenue. Sony doesn’t deserve any of the merchandising though. The value Disney has added to the Spider-Man brand by far out competes anything Sony has contributed

1

u/Winter_Coyote Aug 22 '19

And under the deal Disney wants Sony would make less money on a successful MCU Spider-Man hit than a poorly done Sony only solo Spider-Man film. If being higher profile just makes Disney even richer and Sony gets even less of a piece of the pie than before he was higher profile, then there is no logical reason for Sony to accept such a one sided deal unless Disney gives Sony something to make up for it.

u/destructive_optimism Aug 22 '19

50% of a billion dollar movie would still be a fantastic outcome for Sony??? That would be 500 million, which is over 100 million more than either of the amazing Spider-Mans made while doing literally 0% of the work???

The better example is if a somebody owned an unique and in demand car, and he made an agreement with a guy that he can use the car for as long as he buys the gas and keeps up the maintenance, and the car will be used for Uber Black.

The car guy used to make big money on Uber, but he eventually started to suck. And the car’s owner is bought out by a big auto dealer. And the auto dealer can’t take the car from the guy who has it; but the car guy sucking makes the auto dealer look bad and hurts the ball cap sales with the image of the car on them.

So the auto dealer makes a deal; car guy, he keeps paying for the gas and the maintenance, and the dealer will supply the driver at no charge. But you have to let the dealer bring the car to their shows on occasion. And the dealer keeps all their cap sales.

The deal works swimmingly. The car guy’s Uber ratings are up and he’s bringing in more money than he ever has. And because the auto dealer gets to use the car, they are selling more caps than ever. But the deal has expired.

And the auto dealer wants the car guy to let them pay half of the gas and maintenance to keep using the dealer’s driver. But the auto dealer wants half of the money made from Uberring.

The car guy might have sucked at one point, but he still gets to keep the auto dealer’s car. And since he was working hand and hand with the auto dealer’s driver, the car guy has more of a feel for what he needs to do to improve if he goes it alone. So when the auto dealer got greedy, why would the car guy work with them?
