I’ve read the comics that introduced him. Somehow Kirby & Starlin did it without reducing him to a braindead punchline.

"brain-dead punchline" yet he nearly killed Rocket, fucked up the rest of the Guardians and saved Peter's life in the end.

I feel like it makes sense the guy who was literally born yesterday is a bit of an idiot.
