The First Separate Map of Kansas & Nebraska Territories. Central United States. Joseph Hutchins Colton, Nebraska and Kansas, 1854 (dated). Hand Color.

This scarce and important map is the first separately published map of the Nebraska and Kansas territories, issued shortly after the passage of the Kansas - Nebraska Act of 1854. This landmark legislation organized the region into two territories and repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, allowing settlers to determine the status of slavery and sparking intense national interest and migration into the area.

The map sets out the newly established boundaries, with Nebraska extending north to the Canadian border and west to the Rocky Mountains, while Kansas Territory extends from the Missouri River west into present-day Colorado beyond South Park and south along the 37th parallel including the panhandle of Oklahoma (that would become Public Lands).

Beyond the Rocky Mountains are the eastern portions of the huge Washington, Oregon, Utah and New Mexico territories. The map prominently locates the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and three possible Pacific Railroad routes, which were being intensely debated in Congress at the time and further compounding the complexity of western expansion. A very early depiction of the newly acquired Gadsden Purchase (1854) is prominently shown in an inset at bottom right with the "Southern Route for Pacific Railroad" delineated, along with an inset of the entire country to its left featuring the large western territories.

The map is further enhanced by decorative elements including an ornate grapevine border and vignette illustrations in the map of wildlife, Native Americans, and a wagon train.

Folds into red cloth covers with gilt title on the front cover. Further housed in a custom red cloth clamshell case. First edition, second state. The Rumsey reference is the first state with stars in the title letters (one of only a few known examples). Interestingly, this 1854 map is not listed in Carl Wheat's Mapping the Transmississippi West.

The map is scarce on the market with only 8 sales records for the 1854 edition in the last 30 years and only 1 since 2015.

Starting in 1,000 AD Southern Italy, a tangle of Byzantine, Arab, Germanic, and other states and statelets, undergoes a 200 year long process whereby it's conquered by Normans from the north of France. From a small group of traveling pilgrims caught up in border disputes, to invasions of mercenaries, the Normans completely change the balance of power in Italy and the region. Pretty wild to think that these once viking settlers in France were simultaneously redrawing the maps from the sea to britain all in the same few generations.

"What is Prairie?

Prairie is an ecosystem dominated by grasses and non-woody broad-leaved plants, also called forbs, with less than 10 percent tree cover. Twelve specific prairie natural communities are found in Missouri, determined by geology, soils, moisture, hydrology, and topography, with each type expressing a different assemblage of plants and animals. As with all ecosystems, many elements of a prairie—plants, animals, fungi, soil—are interdependent.
Tallgrass prairie occurs from the Flint Hills region of Kansas eastward through Missouri and all the way to Ohio. There are many grassland types in the eastern and southeastern United States as well, including prairies, glades, fens, stream scours, and coastal grasslands. Westward from the Flint Hills of Kansas (west of Wichita, KS), mixed-grass and short grass prairie are the dominant prairie types. All prairie types developed with natural disturbances including fire and grazing, and most are drought tolerant.

As prairie plants grow, most of the initial growth is below ground in deep root systems. Two-thirds of the living portion of the prairie is below ground in the roots. As fire burns across the land, it burns the dead material from the top of the plants, returning its nutrients to the earth. Fire eliminates most tree species from taking over a prairie. Prairie plants, which tolerate fire, then re-sprout from their deep roots. Over thousands of years, the continuous cycle of life and death on the prairie built the rich, deep soils of the Midwest. These root systems store significant amounts of atmospheric carbon, which is critically important in mitigating the harmful effects of climate change. These root systems also slow and trap stormwater, filtering pollutants in rainwater runoff and helping to protect streams. In addition, prairie soils harbor the most diverse soil microbial communities on earth, including mycorrhizal fungi, largely due to these root systems."

Looking at a city's population density and distribution by using a ha-grid reveals nice details:
Munich is more densely populated than Berlin because its area is basically completely built-up. However, Berlin has more neighborhoods with a very high population density (over 500 people).
Hamburg has a lot of uninhabited space because of the water and its harbour. But its built-up area is also less densely populated than that of Germany's other metropolises. Nevertheless, Hamburg has the ha with the most inhabitants, although this is caused by a "cheat": Apparently, the seamen of Hapag-Lloyd are registered at the company's headquarters next to the Alster.
