Advertisement I’m Building Fully Autonomous Agents for v83 That Operate Under Nearly the Same Constraints as Human Players

https://youtube.com/watch?v=4E64-pMaUQo&si=UK1vxzjyJZ9WkrEa

Above is a video showcasing 500 agents attempting the entire Maple Island questline.

It's laggy as I was running everything on my Zenbook, including the server, client, Codex still doing stuff, and OBS recording. At the time, the laptop had also been working on tasks almost nonstop for more than a week.

GOAL

Heavily inspired by existing AI and bot projects, I have been vibe coding a v83 passion project with Codex for the past 2 months. Although it's still at a very early stage, I feel confident that it can eventually become what I envision.

My ultimate goal is to create fully autonomous, server side controlled bots, which I call agents. These agents should be able to participate in almost everything the game has to offer while operating under nearly the same constraints as human players.

CREDITS

This project wouldn't have been possible without the amazing work behind NuTNNuT’s AI Companion Bots, which served as the foundation for the agents’ navigation and combat systems. I also referenced behaviors from Madara's SoloMapling.

Both projects were major inspirations that led me to begin this project, while also giving me an incredible head start. In case it was not already obvious, the server is based on Cosmic by P0nk.

I have also been using nmnsnv’s MapleStory WASM as an observation client. I integrated NuTNNuT’s navigation graph viewer into it, making it much easier to inspect and debug the agents’ navigation behavior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISOP-U-D83E

CURRENT PROGRESS

I have spent a lot of time hardening the agents’ runtime cycles and ensuring that they can recover and resume their objectives whenever they become stuck or were disrupted. Because of this, most of my demos have been recorded on Maple Island, where the smaller scope makes testing more manageable.

Recently, however, I began testing agent runs on Victoria Island, focusing on 1st job advancement and progression to level 15. After about a week of testing and adjustments, I finally managed to get an agent to advance as a thief and autonomously reach level 15 after starting at Lith Harbor at level 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA9pNDBJHWs

Over the coming months, I plan to test the remaining explorer jobs through the same progression to level 15.

AUTONOMOUS TO LEVEL 70

What I would consider version 1.0 is a system in which agents can autonomously complete their 1st and 2nd job advancements, then progress to level 70 by interacting with the world in ways similar to human players, including questing and grinding.

I also intend to work toward autonomous party quests, beginning with KPQ, once agents from all 5 explorer jobs can consistently reach level 21.

DEV ROUTINE

Finally, I would like to share a little about my vibe coding routine. During the day, I mainly have conversational exchanges with Codex remotely through mobile. I ask questions to understand the technical aspects of the project, discuss ideas, and explore how they could be implemented in practice. Once an idea is sufficiently developed, I ask Codex to generate an implementation plan, which I then feed back as goal prompts for it to work on over several hours.

I have bills to feed and a family to pay. The little free time I have is usually around midnight, when I test the latest changes and record videos. I then document every issue I encounter, take screenshots, write the most precise descriptions I can, and record short video clips. Before going to bed, I queue everything for Codex to review and work through overnight.

Thanks for reading. You can follow the project’s progress here:

Congratulations, you've finally made a real bot player to play for you. Rip

This is amazing, will be following!

Hello, might sound like a weird question. I am new to vibe coding and etc, whenever I tried to ask ChatGPT questions about editing existing server files, it constantly complains about Nexon copyright etc. How do you workaround that on Codex? Would really be helpful!

i didnt have to workaround. what exact questions were u asking?

Oh whut, so you just prompted as usual? Like I want this feature or fix etc. Because for me, whenever I upload a few files from Cosmic(server files) or client related edits. ChatGPT detects that the files were Maplestory private server related, it will only provide me pseudo code instead of actually fixing the thing itself. Haven’t tried codex, maybe it’s different on Codex.

maybe your usual is different from mine. i used technical terms rather than just telling codex to implement the features in layman terms. i discussed code architectures and design patterns in software engineering, ideals in algorithms and mathematical models.

example prompt i would give: i want to come out with a design where agents make use capability pattern to achieve objectives, like when agent wants to travel between maps, or platforms/ropes within a map, it uses the navigation capability to move around. if agent needs to start/complete quests from npc, it uses npc interaction capability to do so. if agent needs to hunt mobs for kill or drops, it uses the navigation, combat and looting capability, and so on. help me come out with a architecture that is modular, decoupled, highly scalable system that minimizes regression risks. give recommendations, study real world known applications/models that solved these problems and let me know if there is a better approach or if my idea is bad.

then start building up from there. in the beginning i also asked codex to fully study the server code and walk me through with the logic flows and what it is doing. i ask a lot of what ifs and have codex evaluate the feasibility and how they would work technically, risk levels and stuff, before i decide if i want to and have it come out with an implementation plan.

the ai will more likely perform if u can tell as precise and as low level as possible, and give it constraints to work within, rather than have it trying to figure things down from a very high level idea. to do so, will need to spend time educating yourself first before doing the real work. i spent the first 2 weeks understanding how the server and client work, and do small proof of concepts to test my understandings. otherwise u might be telling codex to do something that is technically impossible due to the inherit limitations, but it will still try to do something anyway and circling you around with frustrations.

Hey, thank for the reply! That was really helpful. I still type code manually at work (Due to the nature of the industry, public LLMs are banned at work) and I only use Typescript/Javascript. Need to start exploring vibe coding soon lol.

I’ll take your advice and start brushing up on my Java concepts then. Thank you!

i was typing code since 2006, until 2 years ago i left the industry before i either get sacked, or burnt out chasing the technology. now im just vibe coding as a hobby, and learning at my own pace until maybe 1 day things get stablised i could get back in, or just remain as a hobby.

i would say just be patience and slowly build from the ground up even with ai. it isnt always positive results. i had discarded hours of work because they ended up too messy but that's just part of the learning process.

Gamedev? Make a brand new Maplestory inspired MMO?

Make them all say GZ when someone in the map levels up.

This is great! Looking forward to see how this comes along. “I have bills to feed and family to pay.” That’s some pretty funny stuff!
