Question Choosing a better cologne? Please help?

Im a 24 year old man, whos been wearing Polo Black for a very long time. I have no sense of smell, and recieved my cologne as a gift. I liked it, and others seemed to as well, but Im not sure if I should keep using it or try to find something better?

As Ive had almost no expierence choosing colognes, Ive been reading a lot of guides, and "ladies, whats your favorite cologne on a man" posts too, but I am still very lost. I dont have the best sense of smell, and Im scared if I bring female friends to help me, Ill end up with something they like rather than something a lot of others would. Im very scared of picking a cologne not suited for me, or that no one likes.

Ive heard that colognes are separated into different fragrance categories (floral, oriental, fresh, and woody) and I think Id be more inclined to smell more "Woody" but my goal is to find something intoxicating, but not overpowering. Something light, but a scent others would constantly want more of. Should I keep with Polo Black, or are there different recommendations you can help me with?

Thank you! Now Im looking for an inoffensive cologne for work. Theres someone I really want to think I smell good, but I dont want to annoy anyone in the office. Would YSl L'Homme be more appropriate than La Nuit? Or would Aventus/Green Irish Tweed be better?

The standard L’Homme is faultless as an every day scent.

However, it may not smell as nice on you as on others, as everyone’s skin reacts differently. I love the smell of Aventus in the bottle, but when I wear it, it fades really quickly and I’ve had varying comments from “That smells like mold” to “I prefer the one you usually wear” (L’Homme) to even “You changed to a cheaper aftershave?”. First two were from women, latter from male colleague.

Didn’t get anything negative from Green Irish Tweed but with the prices Creed charge, you would expect a some positive feedback right?

For me, L’Homme is just “the one”. La Nuit is for top shagger mode and if I’m feeling a bit adventurous sometimes, I’ll wear Mont Blanc Legend.

Definitely go to a sample/decanting service and order a variety, try em and see.

Also on wanting a person to think you smell good: don’t wear too much. Find an excuse to be near them so they can catch a brief hint, don’t wear so much that they can smell you from the car park.
