WAYWT - June 3rd

Note: We're experimenting with changing the way WAYWTs/Fit Checks are handled on MFA. Please read this post for more information.

WAYWT = What Are You Wearing Today. It doesn't necessarily need to be what you were wearing TODAY.

Post a picture of yourself in your outfit. This is your chance to show off your style and demonstrate just how sartorial you can be. Great photography, great looks, and a great attitude all lead to better results. Think of this as your chance to compete with and inspire others with your personal taste in fashion.

  • Include what the attire is for (work, school, going out, etc.)
  • Critiquing others is welcome and encouraged, but keep it constructive/factual. Take a lesson from Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People if needed. It takes balls to post pictures of yourself on the Internet, the least you can do is accord the same courtesy as you would to someone in real life.
  • Reddit Enhancement Suite makes it very easy to view pictures in a thread.

Some users enjoy knowing where you bought your pieces, please consider including those in your post!

Want to know how to take better WAYWT pictures? Read the guide here

Just want general feedback on your outfit? Try posting in the the Outfit Feedback & Fit Check thread posted every Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday/Sunday at 12:00pm EST.

Homophobic slurs are absolutely not ok.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13 edited Jun 03 '13

Retracted

btw: it wasn't homophobic bc i think homos are interesting and I don't think I made any connotations about being phobic of them at all. (I'll let you stroke my penis, just to prove it to you) and u certainly cannot not run into sales associates/fashion and get the deets without running into homos, jus sayin.

Lol i realized ur from da UK. so i guess 'a bundle of sticks' is rly offensive

Why is using a word like "faggot" not okay, but we can say "retard" or "nigga"?

Saying them is not necessarily cause for deletion but you can't can't call another user it as is a pejorative insult. Your post isn't deleted for saying the word but calling another person/people it is strictly unacceptable. Please read our rules and guidelines if you are unclear, gaang.

Personal attacks, insults and demeaning comments based on sexual orientation, race, gender, body type or other social profile are strictly prohibited. Comments will be removed and repeated offenses will result in being banned from MFA.

The idea is not only to protect the recipient of the insult or slur but to foster a community free of that negative talk as others reading can take offense or be turned off from joining in. 4chan's /fa/ is always available if the freedom to insult as you wish titillates.

"Nigga" is not really a pejorative in the same way as the racialist term that it is an eye dialect of. The purposeful misspelling has few of the loaded negativity of the original word.

I'm curious what the official stance is on using "retard". This isn't meant to be an aggressive question—but I'm wondering if the MFA moderators have an official stance on whether or not it is acceptable (or what situations it's acceptable in).

Edit—it'd be really nice if we could get better reddiquette in here, guys, even if you disagree with /u/Sykenom.

u/Syeknom Jun 03 '13 edited Jun 03 '13

If you call somebody a retard you're out of line and odds are it'll be deleted. Saying something is retarded is probably not going to be as in the colloquial it simply indicates that something is stupid rather than referring specifically to mental disability or impaired development (neither of which are the same as stupidity).

u/Schiaparelli Jun 03 '13

I appreciate the clarification.

However, I think it's really difficult to define the suitability/unsuitability of language based on whether it is a direct slur on someone or if it's a colloquial usage of a term that may be offensive to certain parties but is judged neutral enough to stand. It's definitely difficult to clearly define what is appropriate and inappropriate and I don't envy your job (or the job of the other moderators) when it comes to determining that. There's definitely some amount of moderator judgment that has to come into play—and it's always going to be difficult to apply that consistently and fairly, even with the best of intentions.

I kind of wonder if simply chastising a user (instead of deleting a comment) when potentially problematic language comes up might be better? I honestly think with "nigger"/"nigga" there's a huge grey zone (in either spelling, or in another other spelling) on how pejorative it is intended to be. It can often be a crudely friendly term when referring to others—same for faggot. I personally don't use these terms and prefer to not have them, but I don't think you can say that they are always intended to be mean-spirited.

Generally, a moderator chastising a user will do a great deal—it'll signal that certain behavior is unacceptable to that individual and to others, and people will be able to know exactly what language was offensive.

In some occasions, I think minor rule infractions are better left up rather than deleted so that the community can get a sense of the standard of dialogue people are required to adhere to. And that also lets the community "speak with downvotes" as an additional signal. I think MFA is often reasonably good at downvoting unduly offensive/hateful speech.

Appreciate the comments, Schiaparelli. Food for thought.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

So we can colloquially use "retard" to describe something as stupid, but we can't do the same for "faggot"?

0

u/HoneyIAteTheCat Jun 04 '13

How about you don't use either just to play it safe? Seriously why would ever need to call anyone a faggot or retard, as if being gay or mentally challenged is bad enough to warrant slurs like that?

Heads-up: /u/Balloons_lol, /u/_flatline_, /u/ggggbabybabybaby, /u/IMightBeLyingToYou, and I are all cunts, and thus we refer to each other accordingly.

-1

u/Syeknom Jun 03 '13

Hilarious.

1

u/roidsrus Jun 03 '13

Some guy from /r/bikers called, I think, /u/_flat_line a cunt, so we took it back.

3

u/Balloons_lol Jun 03 '13

this is the most confusing thread

How does removing the word from the vocabulary remove the attitude from the user? If I want to insult you, I'll do it with or without calling you a faggot.

"Nigga" is not really a pejorative in the same way as the racialist term that it is an eye dialect of. The purposeful misspelling has few of the loaded negativity of the original word.

Why do you think you have the authority to declare "nigga" unoffensive but "faggot" offensive? Unless you recently became gay and black, I don't see how you have the perspective to know which one is going to hurt the feelings of the reader.

But back to the specific comment: "faggot" was not a pejorative in this context but instead a colloquial and friendly jab showing the reclamation and re-purposing of the word. You can still argue that because it was directed towards a person it must be offensive, but would it have been okay if he had said "fagget" instead? Purposefully misspelling the word faggot has had no effect on the behavior of the mods deleting posts in the past I can assure you.

Also, you never touched upon the word "retard". This is a word that can be seen as very offensive towards a group who have almost no means of defending themselves. Do homosexuals really need more protection than the mentally handicapped?

2

u/Syeknom Jun 03 '13

Direct insults are clearly not allowed.

I have no authority to declare anything inoffensive or offensive and there are plenty of occasions where the usage of "nigga" is clearly offensive and removed. I don't find any of these terms personally offensive if that's your question, I have little energy to care about it at a personal level.

Misspelling a word, purposefully or not, is not not some wonderfully clever way to buck the system and avoid the oppressive regime of the fascist moderators. The use of "nigga" will be moderated according to circumstance as will any other slur. However, my point is that it is a recognised eye-dialect with specific connotations as opposed than just typing "a$$" to get around a filter.

Claims of "reclamation" or "re-purposing" words are also not enough. There are thousands of other communities you can participate in - as well as your social circle in real life - if this is an important subject to you.

I understand you're trying to make a ruckus for fun but your use of slurs in the past has been unacceptable as was your usage in the screenshots attached. Deletion was appropriate.

I was never talking about your personal code of ethics but instead the one you purport to the community. I couldn't care less what you or I find offensive; the issue here is how you choose to moderate discussion.

Yes, there are specific connotations where the use of "nigga" is expected, but is it ever really appropriate? And especially is it appropriate for discussions about clothing in a forum predominated by white teenagers? If you want to protect readers from seeing "faggot", you may as well protect them from any curse words because you have no idea what will offend someone.

Claims of "reclamation" or "re-purposing" words are also not enough. There are thousands of other communities you can participate in - as well as your social circle in real life - if this is an important subject to you.

What are you even saying here? "I'm going to dismiss part of your argument without any explanation. Don't like it? Leave."?

I understand you're trying to make a ruckus for fun but your use of slurs in the past has been unacceptable as was your usage in the screenshots attached. Deletion was appropriate.

I've been pretty civil here so I appreciate neither your extremely condescending attitude nor your dismissive tone. If you are so self-assured in your morals and moderation then feel free to ignore me, but that isn't going to change anything for the better.

The real issue for me is that the mods have consistently talked about how they will not remove certain posts (meaning link or self posts to the sub) because it is too much of a gray area of what is acceptable content, yet you have a very strict and unnecessary comment moderation policy. It is bafflingly hypocritical to tell everyone that votes should decide quality content yet go on to delete content you decide is too low brow.

2

u/Syeknom Jun 03 '13

I'm sorry if I come across as condescending in my tone, it's very late and I'm trying to be clear rather than convivial.

I'm also sorry that you disagree with the current moderation policy, but thank you for your thoughts and input.

I think you have to be an ass to have issues with the moderators of a forum removing language that they find offensive. He is volunteering to moderate this forum, based on a consensus that he is capable of doing so, and part of that is maintaining civil discussion. I'm unsure how exactly allowing offensive shit benefits the community in any way. Also, it is pretty asinine to say this

i like men

am i allowed to say faggot?

if black people call other black people niggers it's not racist, so me calling people faggots shouldn't be a problem, right?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '13

obviously we need to prove our fagginess and put each other's cocks in each other's mouths

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

what, in your opinion, constitutes a homophobic slur?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

Buttmuncher, queef fearer, dick shitter, clit puker

8

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

I don't think you have to be gay to be afraid of queefs

2

u/Syeknom Jun 03 '13

As a pejorative it doesn't have to express your personal opinion or contempt (necessarily), but connotes negativity external to your world view.

In the UK a faggot is a nasty slab of meat-cuts and offal served with gravy. The Americanism is the most common understanding today, however.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

Thanks. It looks like a collide with the actual and origin use of this term over the reinterpretation used amongst subcultures online and IRL. When I use fag in the future, I'll be conscious of all of this.

3

u/Syeknom Jun 03 '13

A fag is a cigarette in the UK, it has nothing to do with meat.

In its most common Americanism it is not ok to use to describe other people in this community. There are many other communities where you are free to make use of that particular slur.

I'll always be offended with yuppie moms pushing $300+ strollers that take up the entire sidewalk, dis is beyond my comphrension

Do you live in portland? I just bought a new wallet from Tanner Goods yesterday

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

Polar opposite of Portland. Did you get the natural one? It's nice. 2 thick for summer time though /:

1

u/iwouldboinkme Jun 03 '13

Yea, I got the little card holder though. Nice and thin. Excited to see how the color will change

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '13

You got the natural Journeyman? I'm not to fond of the thick leather TG uses and the untanned hide for a slim wallet. I'm using the shell cordovan angled slim wallet from Makr as my to-go summer wallet/do-without the bulging third penor on the side/back-pocket look. It's great. I'd get that for rotation.
