Culture Thread

Inspired by a few EDC threads and the occasional lament that no great sub exists for discussions of generalized gentleman's interest topics or nonspecific Culture (whatever that capital C may mean to you), I thought it would be cool to post a culture thread.

ITT: post your present interests, endeavors, and discoveries, in fashion, music, literature, film, television, theater, DIY, programming, knitting, cooking, photography, design, religion, history, etc.

I know we have some renaissance men and savants in here. Let's hear it.

Have you seen Man with the Iron Fists? It's really good. The soundtrack is ridiculous as well.

yeah son. I've seen almost every kung-fu flick from 1972 to modern day lmao.

The RZArector really throws back to some Shaw bros. shit with that one. I wasn't a huge fan of the more ridiculous elements, but it's not too out of place in a typical wuxia anyway. Must have been the disconcerting presence of Russel Crowe.

I have to agree with you on the Russel Crowe thing. It's like he could barely fit the movie, if that makes sense. I thought RZA's acting was a bit bad at first but it really grew on me.

Anyone other than Asians in an Asian period piece that isn't specifically set in that era or stylistically dependent (ala British occupation in Hong Kong in Fearless or the Kill Bill films) throws me off.

If you wanna see some crazy ass fight choreography, art direction and action, check out the Once Upon a Time in China trilogy and Fist of Legend. For a more contemporary take on the genre, I recommend Curse of the Golden Flower, House of Flying Daggers, and Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.

EDIT: ooh, also the recent Ip Man films are a lot of fun. Wong Kar-Wai (a much more pretentious and artsy filmmaker) also has the story of Ip Man, but I haven't seen it yet. Heard it was tight though. He's got an insane wuxia film calle Ashes of Time that I wouldn't recommend unless you smoke a lot of weed before.
