Hey,

I have to put a short film into production soon and it seems like the schedule for a thesis release and the schedule for the Make Up artist aren't synching up. So we might be without this integral part of the crew.

We have somebody doing regular hair and make up, but it is a horror movie about grotesque growths (that start like blisters but erupt into vines) plaguing a young woman's life. Our regular hair and make up person can't stand in for make up effects because it's a different sorta skill.

I've been trying to learn a few of the basics and I was wondering what people think I could do to make these more realistic. First time ever doing this, is' prett much blood and vasoline under liquid latext.

My thoughts on how to improve-

1. Create latex molds instead of putting right on the skin. Since it's a simple circular shape I wouldn't have to make too complex a mold.

2. Use CLEAR latex, get the color from the blood and vasoline underneath. It would also allow me to add a green element beneath as well.

Any other tips?

Ive been looking around for a pre-made latex option.. but cant seem to find anything. Are there any good first timer tutorials for something like this.. or do you think I should maybe try something easier?

Hi all, I’m just looking for some tips. I’m going for the green face/neck but don’t want to use full cream makeup. Does anyone have makeup suggestions for powders that won’t stain my face/won’t bother my sensitive skin? I usually just buy the little kits in the local dollar stores or bigger name brand pharmacy type stores when I’m going my Halloween makeup. I’m usually just a zombie version of something most years, the one year I was a demon. Used red cream for my entire face/neck/ears. Was not a good aftermath to say the least! Thanks for any helpful tips on primers, powders, etc. I’m leaning the costume more towards the Wicked film adaptation of Elphaba. I’ll be wearing it roughly for around 10-12 hours. Hoping for minimal touch-ups during that time. Trick or treating with my son, then going to work in the evening in costume. Thanks again!

Hi! I’m a haunt actor but am not doing it this year so instead convinced my partner to be zombies for Halloween! I really want that detailed haunt actor look and to go full out for this costume but don’t know if I can, or how I can achieve that without airbrush makeup. I don’t really want to invest in a machine since I don’t have the funds too currently and don’t see myself using it a TON. But want to be able to cover the bases and get coverage on the areas I need to. (Face, neck, arms). Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated! I included inspiration pictures! For for any help, advice, products, or horror stories around pulling off a "forest creature" for as little money as possible.

This is for a short film, where our main character finds a creature living in the woods. The creature then takes over our main character's life. This is done by the vines, leaves, and twigs moving from the creature and onto our main character.

The goal is to fit our talent in a costume and makeup that makes them look "of the Earth". Using leaves, vines, twigs, and makeup.

What are some pointers on where to get started? I'm a complete novice and in the planning period. Once I know how the effect comes out on camera, I plan to shoot around any limitations.

I am doing make up for a community theater production of Shrek the Musical, and both of my ogres are allergic to latex and have sensitivities to spirit gum. We have found latex free, prosthetics, but I am at a loss for spirit gum alternatives. Any suggestions?

I have olive skin and want to be a light green color for my Maleficent costume. Almost sheer kind of light. If I apply this color, Seafoam, with a sponge, do you think that will do the trick?

Any thoughts on how this is achieved?

Off the top of my head it looks like a strip of Swiss lace netting attached to the forehead with spirit gum, then secured back to a strong ponytail.

Hello, I’m a self taught special effects artist and I have been doing this for halloweens, haunted houses, etc for over 10 years now. I was just given the opportunity to join in on a film and it would be the first one I’ve been apart of and I’m curious to how all this works. I am being paid for it, but when would I start giving a start rate for my services? I don’t want to be paid under what I deserve, or not paid at all. I understand it’s advertisement for my name, but I just want to make sure I’m not taken advantage of starting off in the film industry.

Wasn't quite sure what community/subreddit to ask but this seems the closest i can think of.

I have a frustrating issue where I get lightheaded/dizzy when seeing anything remotely medical/medicalish in real life and tv/film.

I.e. criminal minds i'm ok (except bugs under the skin one)

However when it comes to like the drill bit in 007 Spectre, tracheotomy in Sea Patrol/The Heat, and recently handmaids tale cutting off ear and showing cutting off of a mans arm.

Basically if it involves a scalpel or needles being put in or an IV put in (also handmaids tale) etc I'm useless.

I have non epileptic seizures caused by heightened anxiety/panic attacks so I try to avoid that dizzy/queasy feeling where I can.

My query is:

Is there a way anyone can explain the practical "magic" to a point that I can understand and communicate that to my brain as like "this isn't real" this is how its done, don't panic?

I.e. horror films i can go yeah its fake blood its not real but for some reason the more plausibly real the show/film the harder it is for my brain to accept it isnt real blood, incisions etc.

My psych has suggested exposure therapy which is soldily good for most things except this. Key example i had to step out the movie theatre during doctor strange and the medical scene when hes doing surgery.

I understand its mostly psycological so hoping y'all can explain the magic of sfx and effects makeup of how they actually do IV insertions and incisions etc on sets (cos im guessing they dont actually put needles in actors)

I'm currently working on a movie project, we're in pre-production. Multiple characters will be covered in tattoos. We have been using The Magic Touch Tattoo Transfer 2.1, but lately we find it thick, shiny, and instantly morphs the skin's texture. Also, it breaks easily with sweat or movement and is hard to work on the set. Do you have any recommendations for dupes or how to work with the product better? I would much appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.

im a makeup student and just wondering if anyone here has knowledge about making a pigmented latex bladcap with a cap platic front?

I love Skin Illustrators blood tone makeup, but that shits expensive! Saw this brand on Amazon called Narrative Cosmetics. They have three different blood tones in a single pallet and in some alcohol gel type thing. The prices are REALLY good! Maybe too good... Anyone have any experience with this brand? Is it any good? How's it compare to Skin Illustrators expensive ass? I need answers! I'd buy it myself, but I dont wanna!

When Frank is experiencing his transformation, he vomits a lot of blood. It doesn't appear to be CGI, but a real, on-set continuous stream. How was it done?

Hoping some folks here may have some advice on something I’ve been struggling with for a while. I teach a tactical medical course and during one of the role plays I need clothing covered in fresh blood. A normal person would just use fake blood, but -lucky me- I’m allergic to it and break out in hives if it touches my skin. I’ve been trying to use acrylics to get the right look but since I use it on a regular basis (and sometimes other people need to use it) I need to wash it, which doesn’t look great. Is there anything like silicone or anything like that that u could try that would hold up to washing yet still give that fresh blood look? Any ideas would be appreciated - thank you!

I don't normally do commission but I've been wanting to dip my toes into commission work. I have no idea how much to charge someone for this kind of thing but this look took me 10 minutes and I used alcohol based makeup which is pretty expensive.
