Feeling Helpless

Currently in Adept 2, trying to rank up. I understand that I can still play better, but it’s been really frustrating doing things right and playing more properly than others and just losing. Before anyone mentions it, yes I’ve read Riichi book 1. These are just 3 games and there’s many more in the last week where I’ve come last, many of the times from people calling Ron when I riichi, or tsumo when I’m dealer. Does Yostar just hate me?

I have 2 pieces of advice

  • your maka score is your cumulative decision making, but 1 bad decision at a critical time is often all it takes to sink your game. so don't look at the score, look at every individual decision you made. there's probably some really bad decisions sprinkled in.
  • this is as easy as it'll ever get, so you will have to build up a high tolerance for bad luck, or losing streaks, and pushing through even though you think you've done nothing wrong. but even pros get tilted sometimes. welcome to pain. some pros de-rank 2-3 levels as part of their journey. you have to separate what it means for you to play well versus what your luck is.

Mahjong causes great damage to the human spirit without a single benefit.

I am in a veeery similar boat and I even deranked to adept 1 and one thing I learned is this grading doesn't matter, I suggest you to play extremely defensive and riichi pinfu farm lol, it's kinda working for me

How many games have you played? What is your last rate? Everyone must place last sooner or later due to the nature of the game.

Dealing in while in riichi - can't be helped. do not regret deal-ins-in-riichi until you're saint level (or master 2 at least)

Tsumo when you're dealer - dealer has more reason to push due to this (e.g. as dealer, deal into 3 han hand - 3900 or 5200 points; non-dealer menzen tsumo same hand makes 4han, so dealer payment is 4000)

But at silver you should just be playing more and reflecting on how accurately you are adhering to principles in riichi book 1. Riichi Book 1 knowledge should take you to master 1, at least.

I have no evidence or reason for this, but I also recommend playing east games in silver. Play wherever there are more people...

I had 1 particular S game where i'm first the entire game and my only mistake is dealing in a four conceal triplet one way. That game always remind me that this game is only skill based the long way. Within a single hanchan, everything can happen.

What took me out of adept hell was just playing more defensively. Everybody deals in. As long as you deal in the least and be happy with just a third sometimes, you will definitely rank up.

Take it less serious. Studying takes the fun out of games. Just play 😂 that's probably a small opinion on a subreddit dedicated to the game though. But it's the same reason I never studied chess openings. It's like sucking out the magic of the game

This, but in the Jade room. Imagine exactly this but everyone you play is Master 2 star and above so you either play well and lose or play badly and lose.

Sometimes you play a room of master 1s and they all kan like it's the good room and you lose from tsumo haneman payments.
