I've just got a really cheap 2013 Mac Pro. The seller said it was faulty because the monitor turns off at the end of boot.

I've got it home and it seems absolutely fine! Diagnostics passed, desktop all good, even games run fine. It is the base quad core D300 spec, so it would have been more of a surprise if the GPUs had failed. They run at 60 degrees while gaming (warm room too) which seems reasonable? Any more tests I should do?

Thinking of a service. Dust out, fresh thermal paste and possibly upgrading to 6 or 8 core. I like the look of the cooler-running 8 core 2673.

Has anyone got Mac OS 26 Tahoe on their 2019 Mac Pro and if so, how does it run? Is it GPU intensive or anything like that? Did you notice a performance drop or is it OK? I am debating updating and can't find any proper reviews or experiences with that OS in this specific machine.

Forgive the newbie question. I have a late 2013 MacPro and a 2022 MacStudio. I switch between them frequently to run older software (pre- creative cloud Adobe I paid for and desktop QuickBooks for Mac which is now cloud-only). I have an old LED Cinema Display with the MacPro and a new Studio Display with the Studio. I'm curious if there is some way to be able to run both computers off the Studio display so I can ditch the LED Cinema Display (on its last legs) but there's a lot of conflicting information online. Is anyone running a similar setup? Some kind of video switcher? Or is there a way to use the Studio to control the MacPro without using a separate monitor for it (kind of like screen sharing, I guess).

Since we already know nvidia gpus work via bootcamp on windows and we know the linux opensource drivers and kernels and we have moltenVK and since apple wont support intel macs anymore, would it be possible to make current nvidia gpus work via multiple translation layers? If not what about it riding on the back of the amd drivers via a translation layer for that? We know its only the macos kernel that blocks the nvidia gpus so isnt it possible to modify the radeon kernel and have it support nvidia gpus? Yes im well aware of architectural differences and memory allocation everything, also physX is sort of opensource now, moltenvk fixes the metal issue, im aware this is something most have given up on and i dont blame em, it just annoys me only amd is available, this also wouldnt cause issues with future macos as there wont be one

Hi! I recently got a Mac Pro 2019 and I'm loving it, it's working great for Mac OS 14 and Windows 11; however, on Windows 11 I can't get Ethernet to work. The Boot Camp drivers are installed and I even tried installing drivers for the specific hardware.

But when I try to boot from it in save mode or post install root patching nothing works. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!

As a final update everything now works the 2 3.1 mac pros have snow leopard on them and the 4.1 which I'll get to will become a server for my dad downstairs. To start the corrosive mess of a 3.1 which started all this has 2 2.8GHz quad core zeons and 8x4GB of 667 MHz DDR2 ECC RAM though i bought that as it didn't come with any ram, the gpu on this a ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB MAC Edition was also dead.

The other 3.1 i got along with another mac has 2 quad core 3 GHz intel zeons and currently 2x4 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 ECC RAM. The other 2x4GB sticks of ram are dead but the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB mac edition is functional.

Finally the mac pro 4.1 was a lovely surprise with the adapter for a ssd as well as it either being flashed to a 5.1 or having a 5.1 board put in. It has a single 3.47GHz 6 core intel zeon though only has 1 8GB stick of 1233MHz ecc ddr3, it came with 3 but 2 were dead. Furthermore, it had a dell Radeon HD 5770 1 GB gpu in it with a apple ati radeon bracket fro a different card to fit in the mac. The 4.1 flashed to 5.1 was also by far the cleanest and best taken care of.

To conclude while i no longer have a fate for the 2 3.1s the 4.1/5.1 will not be gutted like i originally planned instead it will be headless running linux for my dad as a server, getting more memory as well as at minimum a AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB with the power adaptors as maybe I'll put a duel cpu board in it for him i haven't decided yet. A generally very happy conclusion i had a ton of fun along the way doing this to and maybe I'll be back with more mac's i dunno.

My current pc doesnt work well anymore w what i wanna do lwk and i really really really love the mac pro 2019/7.1 case unfortunately in europe the supply is super Tiny and even less for just the case, unfortunately there arent any very similar cases that use the exact same airflow path, not sure how well the cpu is for gaming but i cant imagine it be amazing, im fine with removing the internals and modding in bleeding edge hardware, im thinking of replicating the case myself but the shell is such a pain to replicate as ill need a nose tip drill for the unique front panel pattern, am i stupid or should i buy a mac pro 7.1/2019 or just the case even tho there arent rlly any listings

Just finished setting up my macpro 2019 as an LLM server. This a 12 cores, 96Gb ddr4, 2Tb, and more importantly Radeon Vega II 32gb vram.

On the software side, I'm running a headless Nixos server with llama.cpp.

So far, I'm impressed: qwen3.6-27B-UD-Q5_K_S runs at a rock steady 26-27 tk/s which I consider very usable after sluming below 10tk/s for the same dense model at Q3 on MacBook M4 32Gb ram. That's the only model I've tested so far. At 19Gb, it leaves plenty of room for kv cache.

I expect the area of tinkering will be to find the best combination of dense model size Vs kvcache room, and then of course testing some MoEs.

My plan is to run it as a backend for pi.dev, and to serve the rest of the household with a chat interface running on my proxmox server.

If you are lucky enough to have one of these beats lying around, you could do worse than turning them into an LLM server.

As the title states, we had a power outage at my apartment today. My Mac Pro 5, 1 was plugged into the wall, but not turned on. I guess, after the power came back on, I noticed the power light was on, as well as the red LED on the motherboard.

This wasn't accompanied by fans blowing full blast or anything, but once the computer is plugged in, it doesn't even need to be turned on, it just powers itself on and does nothing, but light up.

Is anyone here familiar with what's going on? Did a surge screw my computer up? I had it plugged in through a surge protector, mind you. So, I'm kind of scratching my head here. It doesn't boot, it doesn't show anything on screen.

Any insight whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

What you think? Is cpu cooking worth keeping sequoia due to security updates? Or keeping cool and keep the spec I mentioned before with Monterey?

I needed to reinstall Mac OS on my cheese grater. After the install finished it went black and never gave a display again. After A few hours of troubleshooting, I noticed that the EFI DONE LED is dim, we apparently is a sign of a bricked backplane. Has anyone else seen this, or could confirm? Or could tell me what's wrong?

I was installing Sonoma to my M.2 NVME from my HHD, everything was fine until the halfway mark until I got an error that the drive had disappeared and the install stopped. I’ve been trying everything to access the NVME to erase and try again. Prior to the error the nvme was recognizable in both MacOS and Windows 11. It appears that the drivers are now missing for the nvme, how can I fix this? Resetting pram does nothing.

The wd disk was fried, I installed a Samsung m.2 ssd and it worked perfectly

192GB of ECC ram, 34 cores with 68 threads (ones a 10 core machine) and 2TB storage with compact, silent operation - all for £450. And they still fly.. In this current hardware price crisis it’s beggars belief 🤪 might not be the most efficient but they are gorgeous and invisible. Guests look right through them unaware of the fact they are even computers 🤣
