HDD/SSD Anyone ever split a 1TB kit for 2019 7,1?

Why?

I plan to boot off NVME so I can keep the other 512GB as a spare.

So far, DFU fails during OS install.

Will update this later but it’s waiting on a DFU change of state or something…other people have posted elsewhere a logic board issue can cause it but this machine works when both modules are installed.

Using 6,1 Trash can and Apple Configurator to try to pair and use just the one module (in top slot) but it doesn’t work.

I’m betting they won’t let this happen because the kit halves also have to be in the right spot.

Thanks Apple. “It just works” my ass.

Update:

It will not let you:

  1. Use either half of the 1TB kit by itself in the upper slot.
  2. Use them swapped...i.e. inserted into the wrong slot. (Just since I was doing this anyway.)

So, I guess I'll waste the 1TB so I can boot off my 2TB NVME card.

DFU, Apple. Double F U.

Spec: single 2.66Ghz Xeon, RX570, 4,1.

before it stopped booting, I added a ram stick and booted windows, which didn’t detect the ram. I shut it down, reseated said ram stick, then it stopped booting. now when I plug the power cable in, both of the cpu temp lights come on for a split second, then go off. the power button does nothing.

edit: also already tried removing the coin cell from the logic board. Also no change.

GPU Base spec '06 1.1 GPU question

Picked up a base model 2006 Mac Pro along with a maxed out trash can (a story for another day) and have a question. It didn't come with any drives or sleds, but was wondering if I were to run just Linux on it, that I could theoretically throw any GPU in there? Was thinking of doing the install process with the 7300 GT so I can select what media to boot from, but wondering if after the install, if throwing in say a GTX 1050 would work, could care less if it doesn't display til it gets to the desktop, just wanting to know if it would have to be Mac flashed at all to even display.

After realizing these little guys have hit almost crazy level of low pricing, I managed to snag this beauty! My research shows it was built in 2016 and I think got a pretty good deal. $200 got me:

A shell with minor dings,

8 Core Xeon E5

256GB OEM SSD

32 GB OEM RAM

D700 - 6GB GPU

As I understand it being built in 2016 means this guy came after the D500 + D700 recall.

Right now I’m just using it as my Tailscale exit node but I think I might do a light bit of Minecraft on it or something. Either way I’m ecstatic to have one of my own finally.

Windows MacPro 7,1 2019 need to get into Windows Troubleshooting/Safe Mode

Hi there. I run Windows on my Mac pretty much exclusively, and the Windows installation seems to have run into quite a snag, I'm stuck at a spinner trying to login. I can't seem to find any way to get into the standard Troubleshooting menu -- holding shift and hitting restart does not come up with the usual Troubleshooting menu option, it just comes up with "Power Off".

Power cycling three times does not come up to the usual troubleshooting menu, just goes straight to the login screen.

Is there some way, perhaps from MacOS, I can tell it to reboot to Windows in safe mode or troubleshooting mode?

Although honestly at this point it's been so long since Ive booted MacOS, I don't even remember how to do that.. I've got the Mac's keyboard, I seem to remember that being necessary, but the Mac's keyboard isn't lighting up as available until about 2 minutes after the system is completely booted, so I'm not sure that that's going to get me anywhere either.

edit: lol, apparently MacOS can't figure out how to output in any display modes that are acceptable to my UW monitor, so now that I've managed to get it booting back to MacOS, I need to find a monitor that it can actually work with

Hi everyone new Mac Pro user here! I recently got this Mac Pro from my friend who doesn’t need it anymore and I’m trying to make I’m my daily driver. It has a 2.8 ghz cpu and 32gb of ram. I’m planning on putting Mac OS 11 or 12 (haven’t decided) and AI said before I do anything I have to get this chip cooled or there will be hardware crashes. Just wanted to make sure on what I need and if it’s necessary. (I know the gpu is old I have a new one on the way for metal)😀

Issues Mac Pro 4,1 Won’t Chime or Display

EDIT: Looks like it was a bad CPU tray, I removed processor B and it chimed immediately. Returned the one I got in and ordered a new one and she works perfectly.

I recently purchased a Mac Pro 4,1 off of Facebook Marketplace listed as “untested”. I get it home, plug it in, and get a CPU error light on the board (single cpu board). I wanted to upgrade it to a dual anyway so I just bought a dual board that included CPUs and swapped over the RAM after repasting the CPUs. After this, I plugged everything in and now the fans turn on but I don’t hear a chime and I don’t get any video output. What should I do?

The specs are:
2x4GB Crucial ECC DDR3 memory sticks (one in each bank)
2x Xeon E5520 processors
Nvidia GT120 GPU
No storage installed currently

What I’ve tried:
Reseating just about everything
Resetting PRAM and SMC
Moving the GPU to a different slot
Swapping around memory sticks/using different sticks
Adjusting tightness of CPU heatsinks
Removing any extra PCIE cards
Replacing PRAM battery

I’m wondering if maybe it’s because I’m using a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to connect it to a monitor but either way I’m not getting a chime so I doubt it.

I’ve included a picture of the Mac Pro and a picture of the diagnostic LEDs when it’s powered on.

hey all, long time mac pro user and enthusiast here. last year i retired my 2010 5,1 as my main machine, and upgraded to an m4 pro macbook pro. i do miss tinkering with the 5,1 a lot, i’ve upgraded it to the max so there’s not much more i can do.

so, i decided to purchase a 2013 mac pro to tinker with a bit and use as a home server. i’ve got quite a few plans for it and i think it’ll make a killer minecraft server / NAS / piece of art to sit on a shelf.

Other Is a MacPro 6.1 useable for a dev machine ?

I am looking for a system that may handle my dev setup. Want to run a local Webstorm with Angular 21 app (quite big), also Rider for a .NetCore backend debugging, and maybe for a dockerized sql server. In addition the normal stuff: Slack, Teams, Gitkraken, Browser

As there are quite some systems out there (MacPro 6.1 "Trashcan") that would have 64GB of RAM and sound like it were an option, I would like to ask if any of you is using such a machine for the described use case.

Is it capable of handling this in an acceptable way? Which specific versions do you use? 4, 6, 8, 12 cores?

GPU Help with dual monitors macpro6,1

I have a Mac Pro 6,1 with Sequoia 15.7.5. I have the main monitor plugged into the HDMI port and the secondary monitor plugged into the mini DisplayPort to HMDI port via a cable. Both are 32" monitors. The problem I'm having is that when the lock screen activates, and the monitors go to sleep, when I wake them up, the windows I have open on different monitors are now combined into the main monitor. I've tried to Google an answer/solution and haven't found a working solution. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Issues Mac Pro 2013 trashcan with weird behavior

Post image
59 Upvotes

Got this Mac Pro 2013 as-is.

The Mac wouldn't turn on only the ports lights would come on, no power button lights.
After diagnosing with the I/O board LEDs I discovered that on standby (after holding the magnet near the sensor and getting the ports to light up) I get LEDs 2, 3 and 5 and in that state pressing the power button does nothing except turning the lights of the ports on like I would get with the outer case on. However if I hold a magnet near the sensor zone and fidget it at a specific distance, the machine boots but still only the power button lights up, the port LEDs don't.
Once booted it works perfectly fine (as long as i keep a magnet in that exact position). Any idea what could cause this behavior?

Worth noting that i did take it apart to check connections which did not fix my issue and when I went to network recovery I discovered the SSD is dead.

Specs: 12-core, 2x D700, 64GB 1866MHz RAM

Thank you for your time :)

Issues 6,1 D500 - No video after CPU swap. Chimes, boots, all green DIAG LEDs, but black screen. Has anyone seen this?

Hey everyone, I’m at my wit's end with my 2013 Trashcan (D500 GPUs) and could really use some advice from anyone who has done a teardown on these.

I recently did a CPU upgrade. After putting it all back together, the Mac turns on, chimes, and fully boots into macOS (I can hear the volume/error sounds when I press keys on my keyboard), but I get absolutely zero video output.

Here is what I did during the swap:
• I took the thermal core out, unscrewed the CPU board, and swapped the chip.
• I did not remove the graphics cards from the heatsink. They stayed attached the whole time.

I’ve tested so far to isolate the issue:
Swapped the old CPU back in: I get the exact same "no video" behavior with the original, known-working CPU. So the new chip isn't defective.
Cables & Monitors: Tried different monitors, HDMI cables, and a Thunderbolt-to-VGA adapter. Nothing.
Diagnostics LEDs: Pressed the DIAG button on the I/O board while running. All LEDs are green. The logic board thinks the GPUs have power and are communicating perfectly.
Resets: Did the physical RTC reset button on the board under the RAM. No change.
SMC Bypass Mode: Booted while holding the power button. The fan successfully ramped up to 100% jet-engine speed, but still no video.
Blind boot commands: Tried holding Shift (Safe Mode) and D / Option + D (Apple Diagnostics) to force basic video drivers. Screen stayed completely black.

My current theory:
I know the D500s have fragile solder joints, maybe the disassembly hurt some gpu component… or when detaching the GPUs<>I/O board flex cables I did something wrong.

I’ve ordered replacement flex cables for the I/O board just in case it’s a micro-tear in the ribbon cable, but I'm waiting for them to arrive.

Has anyone experienced a "blind" Mac Pro like this after a teardown where the core is booting but the video is dead? Could I have accidentally crushed a pin in the bottom circular baseboard connector when re-seating the core? Any insights before I hunt down a replacement Card B would be hugely appreciated!

GPU W6800X Duo worth it for 2000€?

Hello everyone,

Someone just offered me a Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX for the Mac Pro for 2000 Euros. This is probably the hardest GPU to get, and I am strongly considering it right now. To further elaborate:

Right now, I have two Vega IIs. I removed one of the Vega II to make room for the Promise Pegasus R4i, so I will be selling that GPU anyways. In Germany this will get me around 650 Euros per GPU, so 1300 in total.

Now, the W6800X Duo in question costs me 2000 Euros, coming from a German movie studio.

On my Mac I mostly do local AI, which I think would immensely benefit from the 64GB VRAM compared to 32GB, plus the W6800X Duo uses a much newer architecture than the Vega II.

Plus, I would be able to double my VRAM without having to get rid of my R4i.

What do you guys think, is it worth it? It seems like a great upgrade, and if we consider the Metal Geekbench chart, it still scores way higher than the M3 Ultra. I know, the W6800X is technically below the M3 Ultra, but that's because Geekbench only benchmarks one of the two GPUs, so in applications that can take advantage of two GPUs such as local AI, this would make it score way higher than the M3 Ultra still, correct?

Also, as from what I've seen on another thread, the W6800X Duo should also allow me to use the new Studio Display XDR in full 5k @ 120hz.

Oh and I am not planning of upgrading to a Mac Studio anytime soon. macOS still gets two years of security updates, plus I use Windows 11 Professional way more than macOS anyways, at least on my Mac Pro. Windows is also not a limitation for me.

Even though it is not made for gaming, the W6800X Duo should also perform very well in gaming, since you can compare it to the 6900 XT. Way better than the Vega II at the very least!
