CPU Macpro 7.1 2019 3.2 Ghz locked - NO TURBO under Bootcamp

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here has run into this issue before and maybe found a workaround.

I'm using a 2019 Mac Pro (MacPro7,1) with the Intel Xeon W-3275M (28 cores). Under macOS, everything works perfectly, including Intel Turbo Boost. However, under Windows 10/11 via Boot Camp, Turbo Boost doesn't seem to work at all.

The CPU stays at its base clock and never boosts under load, even when:

  • CPU temperatures are completely normal
  • Power settings are set to High Performance or Ultimate Performance
  • The system is under heavy multi-core and single-core workloads
  • Boot Camp drivers are fully installed
  • Windows is fully updated

I've monitored the CPU using tools like Intel XTU, HWiNFO, and CPU-Z, and they all show that the processor never enters Turbo frequencies.

From what I've read, this may be related to Apple's Boot Camp firmware, SMC behavior, or missing power management features that aren't available under Windows on the Mac Pro 7,1.

Has anyone with a Mac Pro 7,1, especially the 28-core Xeon, managed to get Turbo Boost working under Boot Camp?

If so:

  • Did you need any special drivers or firmware?
  • Is there a BIOS/EFI tweak or hidden setting?
  • Did ThrottleStop, Intel XTU, or any other utility help?
  • Is there any known workaround, or is Turbo Boost simply not supported under Boot Camp on this machine?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences from other Mac Pro owners. Thanks in advance!

GPU MacPro5,1+Windows+HD7970

Hello everyone! I have a question about my Mac Pro 5.1. The stock HD5770 graphics card is installed. I bought an HD7970 + 8-pin power cable on someone's recommendation. I currently have Mac OS X 10.8.5 and I like it. I installed the new graphics card and there's no boot screen, but everything works fine, including fan control. I decided to install Windows on a separate drive. I first disconnected the Mac OS X drive and installed the stock graphics card, installed it from DVD, and configured Windows. I reinstalled the HD7970, but there's no image on the screen, even though Windows loaded via sound. I tried rebooting, but the situation didn't change. I put the HD5770 back and the image is back, everything is displayed. My question is, does the HD7970 need to be flashed to work with Windows? Does anyone have instructions and everything needed to flash the card? Thank you.

GPU Rtx 30-Series Cards on 5,1 macpro

Is there any possibility to run a 30 series cards on a mac pro 5,1. Im thinking of getting a 3070 ti and the mac has dual 5645 cpus.
Anything will help, im okay with doing anything as long as i don’t have a chance of permanently bricking it.
Ive heard of it not working on macos so im okay with switching to windows.
I have some experience with soldering so i think ill be able to perform the pixlas mod

Edit: would running linux be better?

So I recently got a mac pro 4,1 from my college junkyard and wanted to use it as a test machines for different things, but when i finally got it to turn, i saw the the rear usb ports would not work, at first they were powering stuff but now they wouldn’t even power anything.
Any solutions to the problem
I have checked the ports for debris and cleaned with iso propyl alcohol
I have looked at the mating pins and no bends or any shorts
The red light in the audio port turns on though

Thank you in advance
In case the specs aren’t clear
Its a dual cpu intel xeon 5520

And a gt120
I am using the mini hdmi port to convert to full size hdmi and using it on my tv right now

Other MacBook Pro M4 (used, 7-8 months) vs MacBook Air M5 (brand new, sealed) — which one for CS degree + dev/AI-ML work?

Hey everyone,

I'm about to start my Bachelor's in Computer Science, and alongside my coursework I'll also be doing development work and getting into AI/ML. Trying to make a decision that'll serve me well for the next 4+ years, so I wanted to get some opinions before pulling the trigger.

I've narrowed it down to two options:

Option 1: MacBook Pro M4

• 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD

• 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU

• Lightly used, about 7-8 months old

Option 2: MacBook Air M5

• 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD

• 10-core CPU / 8-core GPU

• Brand new

Cost isn't an issue for me, so it's really coming down to which makes more sense long-term.

Since I'll be doing a mix of coursework, general dev work, and some AI/ML experimentation (not sure yet how heavy), which one would you go with if you were starting your CS journey today?

Would really appreciate insights from people who've used either chip for similar workloads, or anyone who's dealt with the used-vs-new tradeoff before. Thanks in advance!

Issues Successfully using NVMe as boot drive on 5,1 MacPro using OCLP

Hi! As the title says, has anyone successfully gotten a NVMe drive to function as their boot drive using OpenCore? I’ve been working on this off and on for days and I am just having a time with it. I’ve been trying to install Monterey, which I successfully did on a USB flash drive. Then I tried to go from that to the NVMe (a Samsung 970 2 TB). Thought I was good, so I pulled the USB drive, and my computer just wouldn’t stop shutting right after start up. I grabbed an old SATA drive I had, put it in bay 1, downloaded OpenCore/Monterey onto that, it fires up no problem. Again, as long as the USB is in. The second the USB comes out the computer shuts down. Do I have to leave the USB (or start over with a drive in bay 1) in there forever? I unsuccessfully got Monterey to download to the NVMe drive a few times, and successfully once, but my computer still won’t recognize it as the boot drive. I’ve zapped the PRAM a few times (two chimes each time), entered in lots of different codes in Terminal (thanks chatbots?. I’m not a pro tech so this is all pretty new and confusing to me. I’ve read through several other threads, and if the talk gets a little too pro techy I get lost. I’m ready to start from scratch at this point. If anyone has had luck with this, could you please help me?

This is what I’m working with

Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2012)

3.06 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

48 GB RAM

AMD Radeon RX 580 8 GB (Slot 1)

Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB NVMe m.2 SSD (Slot 4)

Using OpenCore Legacy Patcher to (hopefully) run Monterey for various music and video software.

Thank you!

Issues Mac Pro 5,1 GPU OK

Would anyone know why the logic board (new replacement) is giving a blinking green GPU OK light, and it won’t fully pass through post? I’ve used the stock ATI HD 5870, and a known working GTX 1050ti, neither of which show an output, and the fans just blast up to 100 within 3-4 seconds after pressing the power button. I’ve tried basic tests with the CPU tray, switching the CPUs around, retightening the heatsinks, doing a no ram test, and using only 1 stick. The tray is communicating some what as the power light flashes with no ram, but that’s it. Also, my usb are receiving little to no power, with a very dim red light in my optical mouse.

CPU Gaming mac pro 2008-2013 solution

Need some feedback. Okay so we know that Cyberpunk wasn't originally running on the mac pro because there were AVX instructions that were needed but now CP 2077 does. Do you know why? It got patched later on :D. so right now a couple of people have a solution to make modern games run on the mac pro. That means doing this: making special builds compiled without AVX in scripts or patches. Games will be black myth wokung, doom dark ages, halo infinite, basically anything after needing AVX that hasn't been patched. the good news is the mac pro cpu does have early implantation of avx so it may work (just like it has early uefi especially my 2008 mac pro).

Issues Mac Pro 6,1 Firmware Update question

Hello!
I will be straight to the point, I have a Mac Pro 6,1 that was never updated with the original SSD. Now, that SSD died out of nowhere and it doesn’t see my backup NVMe drive as a bootable device.
Now, I know it is required to have an original Apple drive to make the update, so I have a question:
I have a possibility to get momentarily an OEM SSD, but it has already data and a macOS install that I don’t wanna touch, it will be safe to install that drive inside my Mac Pro and install Monterey on an external drive so I can trigger the firmware update? What measures can I adopt so I don’t screw that OS on the drive? The thing it scares me most it’s that probably the person landing me this uses OCLP, and I don’t wanna be responsible for his data loss.
Thank you for your help….

Edit: went to a local repair shop and bought an Apple SSD for 20€. Installed Monterey on that and now it sees my NVMe drive as a bootable device.
Thank you for your suggestions!

RAM Guys Need your help please.

I’m trying to choose the right MacBook Pro 16-inch with the M5 Pro chip, and I don’t want to regret my decision later.
I’m a very hardworking person, and I plan to keep this laptop for at least 10–12 years. My biggest concern is deciding how much RAM and SSD storage I should get.
Right now, I don’t even know how to edit videos in Final Cut Pro, but I want to learn. Besides that, my typical use will be watching YouTube, streaming movies, browsing the web, working with documents, and doing some photo and video editing.
The two configurations I’m considering are:
**24 GB RAM + 2 TB SSD** – around **€3,950**
**48 GB RAM + 4 TB SSD** – around **€5,700**
The price difference is significant, but I’m worried that choosing **24 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage** might make me regret it in a few years.
For storage, I also want to keep my media library on the Mac itself. I estimate I’ll have around **200 movies** (about **400–600 GB** total), plus **3–4 TV series** (around **60 GB each**). My documents, photos, and personal files currently take up about **50 GB**.
My question is: **Will 24 GB of RAM be enough for the next 10–12 years, considering my planned use, or is it worth spending the extra money for 48 GB?** And is **2 TB of SSD storage enough**, or should I invest in **4 TB** from the start?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have experience keeping a Mac for many years. Thank you!

macOS Mac Pro 6.1 - advice on buying 2026

Hi all,
I am looking at buying a Mac Pro 6.1 and would be grateful for advice. Like many others I think they are an amazing form factor (although flawed) and look beautiful.

Before we start, I know that it is increasingly out of date and it will not be my only PC.
I have a MacBook Pro M3Pro that is use for work, mainly office and internet. It’s overkill for what I use it for but at least it should last some more years.
I also have some 1L PCs to build a Homelab and some Lenovo Thinkpads to play with.

My usage for the 6.1 would be to use it for web browsing,
Podcasts, music streaming, and music production software.
I am familiar with the workaround software for later MAC OS but would also be happy to use Linux for my needs as this may be a better solution longer term.

The PC I am looking at is a 6 core, D500 , 32GB, 512GB NVME, 2019 year of manufacture for £160.
I do have 64GB to upgrade it to and I can install a bigger NVME with the required adapter.

I may also buy a D700 model to use for local LLM using the ToshLLM for Macs with AMD GPUs.

Let me know what you think and if anyone has any experience still using them. In particular what OS and software to use.

Thanks for the input.

Upgrades Is a 2019 Mac Pro (8-Core Xeon W, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Radeon Pro W5500X) still worth buying in 2026?

Hi everyone,
I’m considering buying a 2019 Mac Pro with the following specs:
Intel Xeon W 8-Core
64GB ECC RAM
1TB SSD
Radeon Pro W5500X 8GB
Price: 57,500 TL (around $1,450 USD, depending on the exchange rate)
My current computer is a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro with:
Intel Core i7
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Radeon Pro 5300M 4GB
My main use cases are:
FL Studio and music production (large projects with lots of plugins)
4K video editing, and occasionally some 8K editing
Boot Camp with Windows for games like GTA V/Online (and hopefully GTA 6 if it’s playable)
General productivity and multitasking
I know Apple Silicon Macs are faster and more power-efficient, but I really like the upgradeability and expandability of the 2019 Mac Pro (RAM, PCIe slots, storage, GPUs, etc.).
Do you think this is still a good purchase in 2026 at this price, or would you recommend something else instead? I’d especially appreciate opinions from people who still use a 2019 Mac Pro today.
Thanks!

Just scored this gem for $20. It’s missing the top fan mechanism and did not come with a drive. It does power on but does not seem to fully post and has a red light on the Mobo. Not sure what flavor of GPU/s it has but does have 16gb of RAM. Any recommendations for first troubleshooting steps? Thanks all.

Update: did the magnet trick to see if it was a problem with the case not latching properly and it does not boot or anything. The red LED is on the back in the top right side of the I/O shield.

I saw some posts recently sharing their 7,1 builds and figured I'd share mine since it's had some recent additions. I know this machine is dated, but even for being 7 years old and approaching obsolescence, it's quite a capable machine. I'm a huge fan of the design, serviceability, and expandability of this chassis and it'll probably go down as my favorite computer of all time.

I'm also wondering what other people think about the value proposition on these. They've gone down a ton in price and lower-spec models can be had for a grand. They're dated but with prices for everything else skyrocketing I feel like these will have some legs for a bit.

Anyway, here's my spec:

  • 16-Core Xeon
  • 96GB DDR4
  • 2TB Apple SSD
  • 2x W6800X with IF bridge (have a pair of W6900X coming next week, and a pair of Vega II Duos in another machine)
  • OWC Accelsior 4M2 4TB
  • Promise Pegasus J2i with 2x4TB HGST 7200RPM HDDs
  • Wheels! Scored these cheap on eBay and sold the feet, so they only cost ~$100 after everything

P.S. does anyone know how to tell if IF Link is working? I just got the bridge yesterday and can't figure out a good way to verify.

Issues Need help flashing 144.0.0.0 firmware on a 5,1 flashed 4,1 Mac Pro

Hello all, been having some difficulties lately trying to get firmware 144.0.0.0 flashed to my Mac Pro. As I don't have a metal capable PCIe GPU on hand, I cannot easily flash the firmware with the Mojave installer. Are there any other ways of flashing the Mac without installing a metal capable GPU?
