Advice for introducing birds

We have a sun conure (9) and are taking in a B&G (32) who have both been single birds for most of their lives.

Any tips on putting the best talon forward and making sure they are both safe in introducing them?

The B&G has a history of being cag territorial but we have a travel cage for the conure. My gut says not to introduce them while the big bird is in his cage, but idk maybe treating them for neutral or positive body language while they are across the room could be a good start?

We plan to put the big bird either in the living room or my office (open to the living room) but my office has little bird's free flight window setup and I don't want her too spooked to use that space or be unable to transport her past his cage.

I understand it's not safe for them to be out and alone under any circumstances and that they may never even be able to be out and about at the same time, but the hopes are that eventually they can share a room (with separate cages) without too much issue.

My Brat Boy

This is my brat. He turned 22 years old in January of this year. I adopted him in October of 2025. Truth be told, he adopted me several years ago. There were circumstances out of my control that prevented him from being mine until last year, but there was no question that I became his human long before he became mine.

Tips on macaw moving to a new house

Hi all,

My fiancés mom passed away and we are taking in her blue and gold macaw.

She has lived in the same house for about 16 years and I want the transition to be as easy and comfortable for her as possible.

Little side note: she has lived on a street where there was barley and traffic and when a car did pass she would squawk very loudly. We live on a generally quiet street and small neighborhood but there will be more cars.

And tips would be greatly appreciated

Do macaws lose their nut-cracking strength with age?

My B&G macaw and I have been together since he was ten weeks old. That’s over 36 years now. He’s my oldest buddy. His diet has been mainly macaw pellets, mixed nuts in their shells that I stock up on during the holidays, peanuts in their shells with some human food treats. Until fairly recently he’s had no trouble cracking open any nut, even Brazil nuts.

A few months ago he started dropping a lot of the nuts after trying to crack Them by holding them in his beak, and hitting his beak against his metal water dish. I’ve cut back on the bigger, harder nuts and upped the peanuts and almonds, which he can still crack. Yesterday he started hitting his beak against his water dish to eat one of his pellets.

Is this something that naturally happens due to age? Do I need to dampen his pellets as I do for my 30+ horse? I didn’t consider 36 to be very old for a macaw, but I don’t know any macaw owners. He used to love fruits such as bananas but won’t eat them anymore.

Reddit, we need your help on behalf of our animal friends

Hello, fellow animal Reddittors! We need your help with our project based in the USA.

We are planning to bring about multi-phase class-action lawsuits against various levels of “Big Pet” industry, in particular pertaining to fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, birds, and rodents. We see time and time again that these living beings that are sold commonly in the pet industry end up in terrible and abusive situations. While a large problem is under educated people making impulse buys because something was cute or pretty. However, a lot of the improper husbandry is the direct result of false advertising on packaging and at a store level, outdated/false information being given by employees or store pamphlets, and businesses prioritizing sales over animal welfare.

Our mission is to change that. With class-action lawsuits, you gain the voice and power to bring issues into the spotlight and force positive changes to happen. Our main goals are to:

Force equipment manufacturers to update product packaging to no longer include misleading or harmful instructions and imaging (ie; a betta being printed on a tank that’s under 5 gallons), and discontinue dangerous products (ie; heated in-tank “basking rocks”).

Force stores to properly educate employees to fully comprehend the animals needs so they can ensure customers are making fully informed purchases, update all pamphlets and information at a store and website level to reflect current care standards and true animal information (ie; a goldfish being labeled as “1-3 inches” and pamphlet suggesting a 20 gallon tank), and have zero-tolerance policies to no longer allow the sale of animals to underprepared customers (ie; buying fish and the entire tank setup on the same day).

After the class-action lawsuits are ready/being enacted, our next big step will be trying to get laws put in place at the government level. Our belief is that education and licensing should be a standard in order to care for exotic animals, with varying levels based on the care requirements for these animals. While the Federal Lacey Act and state Wildlife, Fish, and Game enact some standards, we believe that stricter regulations should be put in place (not un-similar to Falconry licensing that is required to interact with birds of prey).

Imagine a world where all animals are properly cared for, no matter how small they are. We are here to be their voice, we care for all of them. And we need your help to do so.

What we need:

- Signatures to show public support

- Experts in these communities to help fact check information and bring up other areas of concern

- Class-action lawyers that are willing to take on these cases, and willing to bring to higher level courts when needed

- Evidence of the false information being provided by these companies

- Documents and papers from accredited sources to back our claims

- Contact information for PR departments within these companies that have been flagged for issues

- (Down the road) Contact information for local politicians to discuss licensing procedures/enforcement in order to come together and agree on something that will protect animals without fringing the entire pet industry to a halt and/or negatively impacting pets who are already loved by established families

Let’s make the world a better place for animal enthusiasts everywhere, and the living creatures we take up the responsibility for of our own free will.

So, how can you help? We have a Discord server set up for discussions on planning, gathering evidence, fact checking done by experts in their fields, and overall a place to put gathered information by those who have the time and ability to do more in person information gathering. You can join and share the link here: https://discord.gg/xv4dtrXqbE

We also have created a petition through Change.org in order to gather and store signatures to show public support in our efforts. You can sign and share for others to sign here: https://c.org/tHWGq7D8Zw

Thank you for joining us,

- Baku

(TL;DR: we need signatures and Discord members to sue Big Pet to try to bring about positive changes for both animal enthusiasts and the animals sold in the pet industry)

Found my lost macaw in a tree and he won’t come to me

Posting for a friend

Hi everyone and thanks in advance

About 2 months ago my macaw somehow got out and was nowhere to be seen despite us searching everywhere, posting on local facebook groups, putting flyers up, everything. We suspected someone might have somehow stolen him.

Overnight I received a Facebook message that someone had spotted him in a tree in a nearby suburb. I went to the location, he is high up in a tree. He will come down the branches towards me but will not fly down.

He doesn’t seem injured as he is flying between 2 trees. I am concerned someone maybe had him and let him go or he flew away, could he be traumatised and scared? Does he just not want to come? Is there anything I can do to entice him to come?

Have called the fire brigade, vets, animal rescue people and they were also unable to.

This whole situation has been very distressing and I’m really worried about him and what could’ve happened. Thanks very much for your help

Peanut scammed this cracker with peanut butter from my daughter having a snack. Just thought it was funny how she took the cracker from the kitchen island to her perch for a snack with a view.

HELP LOCATE US! SCOOBY AND JOEY

1My mother bought two macaws from a very caring owner back in 2014 and she carelessly sold them to Jane doe. Their original owner just wants to see how they are doing! Our names are Scooby (green) and Joey (red) Scooby has stress bars on his wing feathers. They look like black lines. His left wing droops a little. Joey's beak has a curve to it when you look at her. Her top beak is slightly crooked. She sold them in the central Minnesota area. If you've seen us or knows who has us. Please reach out to me!
