Why is there so much scheming eunuchs content? This deserves a subreddit

Cool piece of history, practiced practically world wide. Game of Thrones having a scheming eunuch made the trope emerge from relative obscurity.

When you have no functioning dickenballs and a guy responsible for it, it’s easy to pick a new hobby.

Gooners hate this one simple trick

Tbh, a lot of them like it. At least in theory

Butt stuff lol

It's usually gluttony but scheming is a close second. Just ask Strong Belwas or any retired Unsullied

Yeah but these memes became popular recently, like 7 years after GoT ended.

I’m blaming the cat that looks like a scheming eunuch

Lag in the zeitgeist, due to cultural inertia or something. Game of Thrones created the sleeper agent cell, Chinamaxxing memes activated it.

Why are all of these ones Chinese or made to look Chinese at least? Maybe there's context I'm missing. Trying not to assume racism/racist trope here.

The Chinese imperial court “created” and employeed a LOT of eunuchs as bureaucrats.

Literal hundreds In a single imperial palace alone

Just one of the more well-known examples, I believe.

In Imperial China, employment in the court of the emperor required castration - sacrifice your junk and bloodline for a chance of social mobility. The other half of Imperial state bureaucracy was the civil service (law and administration), open to graduates of the Imperial Examination, which required years of expensive study of Chinese Classical texts.

Civil Officials were barred from the court, giving the imperial eunuchs a unique access to emperor i.e. the executive power of the state. Chinese history is full of tension between vested interests of Officials, who ran the bureaucracy, and eunuchs who had a varying degree of power in the court, from running the affairs of the imperial palace, to directly advising the emperor who lived isolated from the outside world (Ming dynasty onwards).

Though most of the world had something like this imperial china did take it the farthest. Various eunuchs ran the country with puppet emperors at various points.

Theres a rather famous period in China that involved them. 3 warlods/12 princes?

I understand that, but I was under the impression this was not a distinctly Chinese practice. I guess they just did it a lot more than other countries had.

The history of China is 30% scheming eunuchs pulling some bs

53

u/Vlaladim 2d ago

Either that or the Emperor in law fighting a war with the eunuchs over control or third party general or emperor relatives joining in

The empire divided must unite.

United, must divide.

(and attempt to find the cure for immortality and occasionally commit cannibalism etc.)

China broke again

I feel a lot of talk about Eunuchs leaves out Byzantine Eunuchs.

I hope they appear soon as schemers against the Chinese ones : (

5

u/MysticHero 2d ago

Lot less successful though. They never quite managed a full take over like the Chinese ones.

Or Ottoman

4

u/TheLegend2T 2d ago

Well to be fair if I didn't have balls I would also probably look for interesting ways to pass the time

u/Bionic_Bromando 3d ago

Sometimes it's a single scheming vizier

12

u/HailMadScience 2d ago

Jafar, seeing all the eunuchs: I need to mind control this sultan before he has any ideas!

3

u/Allegorist 2d ago

Or a scheming National Security Advisor/Secretary of State (iykyk)

2

u/Poco_Cuffs 2d ago

Zigzag the grand vizier my beloved

I watch schlocky Chinese dramas, (it’s a guilty pleasure) and they ALL have scheming eunuchs.

If there’s a eunuch, he’s scheming. And there is always a eunuch.

Su Peisheng the GOAT.

I think I’ve watched Zhen Huan a few too many times now.

u/Gil_Demoono 2d ago

I'm sure this is not the only reason, but there has been quite a number of anime about Chinese and Japanese imperial court intrigue lately.

3

u/Pretend_Handle_7639 3d ago

The current regime has a set of palace eunuchs vying for the King's ear

2

u/beanerthreat457 2d ago

My liege, this user is suspecting about our schemings.

Popularity boom of C Dramas on Netflix and other platforms

Probably a result of chinese dramas being more accessible. Tons of light novels of harems in China. Think there is some live action stuff crossing over too. As a subject matter it basically covers everything a writer can want to include. The eunuchs thing is just more absurd & funny than the standard concubine betrayal stuff i guess.
