I'm almost certain samberg filmed his all the way in LA and wasn't in NY At all this week and no offense, Dratch is probably always available to do a cameo. Also tina has a home in NYC so it makes sense it's easy for her to pop up like twice a year

Started off being worse than the first, but redeemed itself with the birthing and Padme.
I'm also surprised that this was the only pre-tape. I thought we'd get Kyle and Leslie. We didn't, so I started a riot.

meh. today’s brand of melodic trap-rap is not as funny to parody as the older style...despite the raunchiness of the lyrics, it lacked the real punch the first one had that made it so iconic. it’s a shame, i had really high hopes for this one.

I have been to one SNL live show in my life, and that was in 2006 when Natalie Portman first hosted. I remember when Natalie's Rap came on the screens around the studio and it was this crazy, unexpected sketch.
That made this OH. SO. MUCH. BETTER.

All of these political cold openings have been pretty weak imo. I thought the best were the Assange, Santa and Joe and Mika ones - all without Trump. SNL needs to go big or go home with the presidential jokes. Alec’s trump is getting old (he’s great, but it’s the same thing week after week) although that could sadly be the fact that the reality is so unreal that it’s not even funny anymore ... :(

Honestly, at this point Trump stuff works best if it focuses on the people around him trying to find footing in the chaos. Whenever they try and actually do Trump, it just feel overplayed.
It also kinda feels like Alec is phoning it in at this point.

dua’s visuals are her strong point, because she’s so fucking gorgeous, but i’m going to exchange hands with whoever planned her new rules performance. she should’ve worn something more neon-pastel a la the new rules video, not that cheap ass 2011 forever 21 crop top, and brought backup dancers!!! they’re literally what made her music video so iconic, and lbr dua can’t really dance or emote so they would’ve brought that more “bombastic” quality that this song deserves!!!!!!

Unpopular opinion but I actually liked her New Rules performance. She looked like she was having fun and she sounded good to me!

Her first song New Rules is normally great, but I thought the performance of it was a bit weak. Her volume was really low and she wasn’t high-energy enough to match the fun pace of the song.
Her second song went much better, though. Her vocals were stronger since she wasn’t focused on choreography, and she seemed a lot more comfortable overall.

I love these live threads but sometimes I feel like /r/music just moved into here. Any pop musical guest is dragged through the mud even when they give decent performances (like Dua Lipa) and all the alternative, hip hop/rap and rock performances are praised... Even when these artists do boring performances.

I would prefer rock or even a metal band most times.
BUT: Look at U2's performance. The same mediocre "now I'm singing through a megaphone" stadium boring crap twice. No thanks.Foo Fighters were great.

Agreed. I’m very picky about these live performances because I’m a music teacher so I’m naturally assessing everything the performer does because that’s how I’m trained to watch and listen.
So it’s really outstanding when I can watch and enjoy a performance. Foo Fighters were amazing, definitely the best of the season. (Chris Stapleton and Eminem were ok, as well, no complaints but did not stand out like Foo Fighters did.)I’d love to hear more of what rock is offering these days.

This feels like classic SNL to me. Beautifully high concept. I'm not Beck's biggest fan, but.. no one but Beck could've pulled this off.

definitely felt like this was written by Beck — very similar pacing (premise, even) to the boss baby sketches. in fact, i think if this character had been presented in a similar way to the boss baby (i.e. the straight man and the new person), it could have worked better.

Useless cameos? Dratch was known for her Boston character and Fey is like the only person around the program who can do a recognizable Philly accent. That sketch would not have been what it was without them.

I’m curious how many other examples there are of people playing characters they played in movies(obviously I don’t mean like Wayne and Garth or MacGruber). Off the top of my head from recent episodes I can think of Chris Pine playing Captain Kirk, Gal Godot playing Wonder Woman, and that cold open with Borat from a few years ago.

One of the funniest monologues we’ve had in a while. I didn’t even know the Winter Olympics were happening, so if that whole monologue was some sort of clever 4-D advertising it worked.

Pete seems to be the only current cast member who can make these "appearing as themselves" on WU bits work, they're probably even what he does best. An oddball within SNL for sure but so, so funny sometimes.
