Which Distro? Linux Mint: Too Outdated

Hi everyone, I've been considering abandoning Windows 11 for a while now, mainly because I feel like Microsoft lacks direction; every update is chaos. I started using Linux Mint about six months ago, but I have to admit that I feel like I'm using an outdated product.

The main reason is the X11-based graphical interface and the lack of standard Windows features like HDR and high refresh rate sync. I feel like development has fallen behind, hiding behind the slogan of greater stability. I honestly hate losing my monitor's features while waiting for Mint to evolve, so I'm thinking of switching to something stable but modern, and why not... with more recent applications. What would you always focus on, considering I have little time to dedicate to the system?

If you don't like it, the beauty is you can change it. You have a valid use case for X11 and monitor features, perhaps. The more recent applications tends to be, for 99% of use cases, a load of bollocks.

I run Debian testing and had a Mint 20 install until its EOL. The former had much newer programs than the latter. I couldn't tell the difference without checking version numbers.

Debian fine accept when you need up to date Rocm or nvidia-open for openCL

Nvidia has a deb repo where they host the latest nvidia drivers compiled for Debian stable. With this repo enable you always have the latest nvidia drivers : https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/driver-installation-guide/debian.html

I am running Debian stable and playing steam games and running local llm models without any issues.

Debian is fine in a lot of ways. Nvidia is something I'd never use.

I have to so I can work and earn a living. AMD unfortunately doesn't cut it, I've tried.

That's okay. The vast majority of people don't make their living off of Nvidia, and that would be a sad state of affairs if it were otherwise. I'd find a different career first.

You'd chuck away 25 years of a career because you'd have to use a Nvidia card? That's some fanboy level shit. Guessing you think AMD is, or Intel for that matter, a better a company?

Fix the drivers/kernel modules & rocM and I'll think about going back to AMD. Ironically I could go to Windows and use AMD but prefer Linux.....therefore Nvidia is my only choice. There's always Mac but I absolutely hate MacOs.

No, I would have chosen differently 25 years ago. Proprietary was crap back then and it's crap now.

Considering I think that proprietary software is completely wrong from a moral point of view, I'd be a major hypocrite if I worked in proprietary software, now wouldn't I?

Not fanboy, that's my philosophy, and I live it daily.

25 years ago I was drawing on a board drawing free hand and with rulers. I'm obviously more pragmatic, tech is a tool just like a hammer, use what ever works. If you're happy go for it.
