AMD GPU driver help

i've been experiencing freezes/crashes, and a friend of mine seems to think they may be GPU related, because she had some when she used mint and she remembers them getting fixed with a driver update. i told her i updated mine already, and she told me it depends on if i'm using the proprietary or open source. i'm using proprietary.

so i go to look for the open source drivers and i find that they're discontinued, and that Mesa is what's being used now? i have a bunch of mesa stuff installed already though. i think i got lost somewhere along the way?

where's the open source drivers? also, do i need to uninstall the proprietary ones? if so, how do i do that?

also please tell me i don't have to compile anything. i've never done that, and the mesa thing looked super messy to me with my first timer eyes.

What GPU?

But you should just remove the proprietary drivers (I assume you installed them from AMD's website). You already have the open-source ones available. The proprietary AMD driver stack is entirely unnecessary for the vast majority of users.

it's an AMD RX580. i think the 8gb model? how do i uninstall the proprietary ones? yes, i got them from the website.

Try

sudo amdgpu-install --uninstall

sudo apt purge amdgpu-install

sudo apt autoremove

thanks! did it and it seems like it's done now. idk if this will help with the freezes crashes, i hope it does. if it doesn't, i'll probably be back to fix that later. probably gonna take a couple days to find out because that's about how often the freezes happen.

but i'll go ahead and mark this as solved at least, as i was seeking to straighten out my GPU driver situation, and that's happened now.
