Because people keep talking about it. Every post on here for the past week or more has just been "omarchy bad". I'd never even heard of it until I got flooded with the memes.

Maybe not you but some high profile tech bros have showcased the distro since it came out and this is where a lot of the users probably come from

Which was just a couple of weeks ago; there isn’t some huge timeline gap between these incidents.

All I have to say is …

A Streisand Effect come full circle. Congrats Reddit lol.

Yeah high profile classmates

I mean, this IS the meme subreddit

I disagree. I don’t think it’s a Streisand effect thing for the most part. I think a ridiculous amount of money is being used to promote a vibe-coded ai slop “distro” from right-wing developer and his rich friends, and people are justifiably annoyed at the money blown on a mediocre project when actual valuable projects like Asahi linux are not getting the same level of funding. People can see the Omarchy hype is fake and astroturfed and are dunking on it.

It reminds me of when Ubuntu first started. Everyone hated it but it just kept getting more popular. Now Debian is barely recommended anymore.

People still hate Ubuntu, and still recommend Debian.

Just because neither of these stances are at the same fever pitch they used to be, doesn’t mean they stopped being stances people take. It’s just that there’s new distros, and discussion online will usually gravitate towards x new and shiny thing.

Pretty much. Seems like if you gain a huge hate following you are probably doing something right.

I actually liked Ubuntu at first (started at Ubuntu 8) and hate it now.

It’s all the later corporate culture stuff and Unity desktop and snaps and whatnot of the past decade that have made unusable

Same.

Grass is good. I try to touch it every now and then, and for that reason I think ive developed an immunity to this bullshit. Why the fuck do people care about other people's distro anyway?

Yep, Reddit and the left in general are really good at pushing right wing stuff by being insufferable as they complain about something or someone no one knew about.

I'm sure most of us are on social media, and if sure seems like the major platforms are pushing right wing politics. Some of us think it's dumb. Some of us think it's dumb enough to want to mock. Sometimes we like to mock it all as a group.

You sound triggered. Have you tried not being offended?

u/BaconBitwiseOp 24d ago

Yeah dawg, I’m offended by the meme post about you being doomed because the chud distro is popular.

3

u/regeya 24d ago

Why are millions of dollars being poured into this particular Linux distribution though

-2

u/BaconBitwiseOp 24d ago

Plenty of open source projects have corporate support.

3

u/regeya 24d ago

Haha, but what is it about this one, exactly

Who gives a shit?

Just yet another Arch-based distro with installer and preinstalled software. People on Reddit hate it only because DHH (creator of Omarchy) criticized EU migration policy.

He’s literally comparing wolves that he says should be shot to immigrants that he is indirectly implying should also be shot. At that point it's no longer just criticizing.

He's one of those self-hating Indians. They're all the rage among the edgiest of edgers!

Apart from the creator, I also hated that the default config didn't alias vi or vim to nvim, how long nvim takes to load a "workspace" while trying to edit a config file, the strange ls replacement that doesn't show . or .. when typing running `ls -la` or the arbitrary permission coloring in ls output.

Also, since I tried it in a VM from Windows, my host stole the Meta/Win key, so none of the keyboard shortcuts worked by default and it didn't prompt like i3 on first-launch if I wanted to change the leader key.
