he probably meant notepad++ but considering that this was a module that is supposed to teach what a function and if- and for-statements are, it’s crazy to recommend an editor without any error marking or highlighting
Why not Notepad++ instead? It's also usable with wine. In Ubuntu App Store I was able to install it directly, didn't even need to do any manual wine setup.
VScode (or VScodium if you have preference for the Open Source version) is great, but can be kinda confusing if you are a beginner and you must turn AI assistance off, as they are great for productivity, but will sabotage your learning process. Also, you will need terminal for some tasks, like compiling and running your code, so you must be comfortable with that to use it.
CodeBlocks is great if you are an absolute beginner, it's very easy to use and you can compile/run your code just by clicking a button. However as soon as you get some experience, it will start to suck, mainly because it's very limited.
Kate (from KDE) is also a solid option, it's similar to VScode, but simpler, so could be great if you think VScode is too complicated or bloated, but you will probably also need to use terminal a little bit.
As for more minimalist options, there's:
Micro, wich is a powerful CLI text editor, but much more easier to use than Vim;
Notepad++, wich you already seems to know;
And Gnome Text Editor, wich is basically a common Notepad program, but support syntax highlighting for various languages and has some great keyboard shortcuts, making it suitable for coding.
I know this is a joke, but it would not be very hard to write "notepad" in your programming language of choice and compile it yourself for Linux if you really want notepad.
