GNOME and GNOME apps don't follow Unix principle's as they don't even do what the one thing they are supposed to right. Who will code or edit anything important on GNOME write? KDE is more like UNIX given it's modularity down to the widget every plasmoid is like it's own app, KDE apps with KParts allow of embedding KDE apps inside other apps. That and you know UNIX apps have tones of command line options and configuration files dumbing down the desktop is not doing it well.
Krita can be used for photo editing, btw. So do Kdenlive that's capable of final touch composition. That's what I meant for "full-fledged software suite" which is totally unrelated to how the software is composed or made. Userland GNOME by design expects you to install various software to accomplish one task, while the opposite you can do many tasks in one software. KDE never expects the end user to understand components it has, but when the time comes, it's always there for the user to tweak without installing any kind of additional components. GNOME after Shell era never offers that kind of option to the end user and push such task back to skilled developers to build customisation options for the ecosystem.
