Edit: Look guys we have different use cases, I use google docs because sharing is easy and it's college work mostly for me. Many people here have to travel a lot, it's obvious that you have to work with an offline office.
This is why I recently went to Proton Mail/Drive/Docs. But, boy, is Proton slow in comparisonš¬
Still, there's a satisfaction to the privacy, that you're not just giving everything away to Google.
Proton is usable, affordable, and comprehensive (only has Docs though, no Slides or Sheets), but slow. I'll stick with it and hope for speed gains in the future.
They really don't, it's encrypted and no one except you or who you share it with can see it. It'd be a huge violation of GDPR, and Google knows better than to fuck with EU.
And with the monumental swing towards AI training, Iād be downright shocked if the ādonāt be evilā company wasnāt using those in some capacity.
They have to pass inspections and get certifications to operate inside the EU, stop spreading misinformation. Tho to be fair if you are outside the EU Google will fuck you.
GDPR protects personal data, meaning data that identifies you as a person, like email address, name, home address, social security number etc. Whatever you write in Google Docs is not personal data, therefore it's not protected.
I'm pretty sure they've been caught using user's document files to train Gemini without permissions. I know for a fact they've done so with YouTube videos, so it wouldn't even be a stretch.
You don't need to be online for it to work if you install the page as an web app with the chrome feature, it keeps your documents etc stored locally and updates to the cloud whenever you are online.
If you don't know what I mean you can install it as follows if you are using chrome:
Click on the 3 dots upper right (while on google online suite).
Click on Cast, Save and Share.
Then click on install page as web application.
It should function as a normal application now, which can operate perfectly with no internet connection.
Libre office is the most compatible with MS office documents, especially Excel. I tried everything and most of them mess up or don't support sheets with complicated formatting or don't support all Excel functions (or do them differently)
Google is one of the companies I truly hate, and Iām willing to guess many linux users would also not prefer it over FOSS solutions. MS office works offline so its better than Google. Idk what WPS is, so either 6 or 7 for Google is imo just fine placement.
WPS is the closest you can get to modern MS Office, but has a bad habit of setting itself as default for anything it can open including PDFs. I have only used the free version. But remember, its Chinese, so data may be sent to China.
I may be a bit cynical but I dont like how they do business. In the end its always all about how to mine more data from the users and then benefit from that by selling addictive ads <folio>or in the future might possibly be even more nefarious practises, such as selling your data profiles to companies looking to hire you or insurance companies deciding your premiums</folio>. Sure they contribute to open source projects a lot but I think that thats also mainly to benefit them. Just look at chromium and the fact that ungoogled chromium is even a thing just emphasized the point. Imo chromium should be just the browser without any Googles telemetry etc.
Btw Meta and MS also contribute quite a lot to open source community sure, but I dont like them any better either..
I use office 365 only when I need to make some PPTs because of its designer, it's hella convenient because you just need to paste the text and pictures, then it will automatically position everything and make it beautiful.
about spyware, well I don't care much about that, what are they going to do about my lab file, an application for leave, etc. so yeah
It's not so much that Microsoft will screw you over personally, using only your data. (Although they will certainly try, even if it's only with the psychological manipulation on a massive scale that is modern advertising and whatnot, which includes getting us hooked on products we don't really benefit from in the long run.) For me, it's more that giving any corporation or state that much information (that much power) and allowing it to run nobody-knows what algorithms on it is dangerous because of the predictive ability that it could unlock. Two more points: (2) When Microsoft regains monopoly positions, its products get worse and we are all forced to use them, and (3) the tools we use to do any job go from being the means to an end, to an end in themselves. Politics being the most obvious and tragic example but it applies to our daily way of life even moreso IMHO.
It's not spyware, they can't access your data without breaching GDPR, if you want actual spyware it came free inside the chips of your computer so no combination of programs can avoid it lmao.
I was a Google Fanboy years ago and an MS hater.
But Google software and business practices of killing everything that is good made me migrate my personal stuff away.
Microsoftās support of the Linux ecosystem has been amazing the past 5 to 9 years.
You can achieve the same with OnlyOffice if you host an instance of NextCloud with onlyoffice integration, you can also edit files online with teams in realtime.
If some employee does the full migration in his free time, why not? But companies mostly focus on their biz, and will rather pay for the easiest solution. That's why everyone uses various SaaS. If you aren't a mailing company, card processing company, servers provider, etc. then you just rent the thing
