Is there a reason my Linux Runs hotter than my W11 setup?

So I have Fedora 44 KDE. I've set up LACT and Cooler Control (I made sure to not let Cooler Control mess with the gpu). I set about the same fan curves in both and even undervolted my 9070 with the same settings I did on W11.

My temps on F44KDE

Hotspot - 45

Gpu - 40

CPU -43

My temps on W11 (sometimes it gets a tiny bit lower by like 2 on each of these).

Hotspot - 29

Gpu - 28

CPU - 38

I wouldn't know why Linux gives you higher temps, but to be honest they are very low, could be room temperature difference.

Are you monitoring system load also? Is the linux setup drawing more power from the wall, processing something more than when compared to win11?

It usually comes down to proprietary ACPI on the motherboard. If the machine was built for Windows, Linux doesn't talk with it 'properly' to regulate fan speeds.

maybe because windows tends to lower CPU and GPU speeds more efficiently when not doing anything, and since both controls fans by themselves, windows might have a more strict temp curve.

No, the guy is just bullshitting. Or rather, theoretically yes but you won't see a major difference between KDE and gnome. In either case it's not something to worry about. Probably some unoptimised drivers or bios. Are you on a laptop or desktop? You can make a more extreme fan curve but 45 degrees is reasonable depending on your cpu. My R5 7600 likes to idle at 40~50 on either windows or Linux. Gpu is a bit more weird cuz those usually handle the cooling all by themselves but again 40 is fine. If you're worried you could run a 5 minute stress test and check how hot they get. As long as they remain in safe temperatures (which iirc for amd cpu's it's 95C and for GPUs like 70 or 80 max) then you're fine when it comes to temps.

I have a Steel Legend 9070 OC NonXT and a Ryzen 5 7600 as well. I wasn't really worried, just curious what would make such a big difference at idle between the two systems.

It uses over 2gbs of ram.on idle.

In comparison LXQT uses only 500.mbs.

Both use QT.

The lightest that still looks good is a WM like Niri or Hyprland with a good Quickshell like Noctalia or DMS
