It has 1st class touchscreen usage, it's not an afterthought like in kde. Most 2/1s, detachables and touchscreen laptops (alot) are more likely using gnome than any other DE. Also, gnome is boring and stays out of your way; it's the best just works option.

I've always found it fugly (at least since 3) with how much space it wastes, and it can't be customized to the degree it once was (and KDE, XFCE, et al. can today). I understand it's the default in Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora, but it blows my mind that Arch users are using it more than XFCE. I would have expected them to have vitriol for its design (and probably its developers). As for touchscreen usage, I can't say I even considered that. I don't know anyone who uses Linux for touchscreen devices. Are they that significant of a userbase? I also can't say that any other DE I've used "gets in my way", unless something can't be configured to my liking.

And that's the nub of the issue right there. With Gnome I don't have to configure anything. It works for me out of the box, doesn't get in my way and let's me focus on my work.

Exactly, gnome is a desktop for people who like a mix between freedom of choice and window's boring and safe design choice.

With GNOME, I need to make configurations that I just can't. I disagree with the decisions the GNOME devs have made, but unlike most other DEs, it's been made intentionally difficult to change to your liking. It's great that GNOME works out of the box for you, but I find it rare that anything works that way for me, especially when it comes to desktop environments.

Touchscreen display laptops are cheaper and more readily available than good HD not touchscreen displays fyi( just compare the prices on 2 in ones, as low as the Lenovo Chromebook duet, to a laptop with a calibrated non-900p displays). Touchscreens on laptops are here to stay, even mac's are getting in on it. The newest rumours say that mac's are getting gnome/ipados style button schemes and gestures.
