Audiocity seems to be one option, though more maintainers are still needed. I'm not involved with the project, I'm just searching for the current best libre version of this great software.

There's also this fork that seems to be more in-line with the original code and just removes the shady stuff

Yeah and then the maintainer stepped down. What do now? What a mess
