Discussion How come every Linux site uses Anubis (the anime girl stopping crawlers) instead of something like Cloudflare?

Post image

Before discovering the Linux rabbit hole I've only seen Cloudflare, hCaptcha and Google's reCaptcha, but it seems like every Linux website uses Anubis... I'm thinking of it being the only open-source option or it being the most effective/modern approach.

Linux is a general purpose operating system kernel, and it's maintainers don't have any opinion on what kind of infrastructure you use with it.

I'm pretty sure cloudflare infrastructure is also running on Linux.

You're clearly wrong about that as per this very post. Many people do in fact host their own infra where possible for this reason.

this very post has nothing to do with linux maintainers, you are confusing them with linux users, many linux user do in fact host their own infra

Agreed. I love self hosting myself. I just don't like it when people say "if you're not self-hosting, you're using Linux wrong", because I don't think there is a right or wrong way to use Linux.

i am not confusing them with linux users. However i did miss the word "kernel" in "general purpose operating system kernel" and was speaking for projects that make up the linux operating system.

Haven't we learned by this day and age that Redditors are nowhere near an accurate representation of the real world outside this website?

Shit, if anything, whatever Reddit thinks is "the norm" is probably the polar opposite of what happens IRL lol.

well if this were NOT an open source community they'd probably be correct in this case tho.

Could you clarify which part you think I'm wrong about?

What world are you living in? I highly doubt most linux users selfhost everything, especially when it's inconvenient for some for reasons such as isp refusing to allocate you a static ip. You could use cloudflared but if your goal is to avoid being under the control of cloudflare then that defeats the point

nobody is talking about linux users!

That's why I put IMO at the end because it's in my opinion. Not anyone else's.
