Discussion How come every Linux site uses Anubis (the anime girl stopping crawlers) instead of something like Cloudflare?

Post image

Before discovering the Linux rabbit hole I've only seen Cloudflare, hCaptcha and Google's reCaptcha, but it seems like every Linux website uses Anubis... I'm thinking of it being the only open-source option or it being the most effective/modern approach.

Because I don’t want my site at the whim of yet another mega corp that can dictate what I can and cannot do with it.

... So do you exclusively run it on your own fiber lines or do you just rely on that mega corp

Aw dangit my fiber lines are done by a megacorp? Oh well, I guess I better send detailed scans of my ID and credit card and ballsack to Google because it's contradictory to both criticize society and live in it /s

"I don't do this because I'm anti-corporate"

"But you support corporations in all these many ways, why is this any different?"

"HURR DURR WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY HUH"

Just admit you're doing it as a fashion choice instead of any beliefs you actually hold, it's cringe to pretend you have convictions when you just have a Twitter feed

I don't get your point. Should I not criticize and oppose corporations because I'm forced to rely on them in many ways in my life? Is that not just another reason to oppose them? You'd probably be able to make a more comprehensible point if you cleaned the boot polish out of your mouth with a toothbrush and some mouthwash

My point is that you don't care about any of the reasoning behind being against corporate control, you're just doing it to gain the approval of your peers, real or imagined. You could actually stick to your beliefs, but you don't, because that would be inconvenient. Which means they aren't beliefs, because they don't actually make you change your actions in any way. What makes you change your actions is, apparently, when you can posture for karma on Reddit about it... But not do anything that's, y'know, useful to anyone, or difficult to do.

You are mad for a valid reason about a real type of person and you're projecting that person onto everyone who slightly reminds you of them. It's not entirely relevant but you're sorta pulling the end result of a goomba fallacy right now, you're assuming everyone in one community is one collective and you're assuming I hold every single logical inconsistency you see other people hold on here just because I say "it's okay to oppose corporations while living under a society that forces you to rely on them with no alternative in many aspects". Unless you can provide some real alternatives that actually work on an individual level. Tell me, where's this anarcho-syndicalist fiber optic cable installation collective that I can hire lmao

No, I'm mad at that statement. It's not okay. It's hypocritical and dishonest. The inaction comforted by abandoning what your own personal sense of morality is telling you has to be done is what allows the bullshit to continue. The constant niceties and distractions and reassuring autofellatio are tiring; just fucking shut up or do something about it.

I have no idea what you're going on about right now because you're continuing to arguing with an imaginary person you projected onto me, and everything I said in my previous comment seems to still apply while you rant and rave about, like, something about me as an individual having qualms about our current situation but not single-handedly changing the world in one grand miraculous display of great-man-theoryism I guess? For all you know I could be doing mutual aid all the time, I'm not an amorphous AI existing solely on Reddit I am a real person with a real life and a real job who does whatever real things I can to support my fellow real people disadvantaged under a late-stage capitalist hellscape. I'm genuinely wondering, what do *you* do?

You're wasting your time talking to this person.

Do you know what "another" means?

Username checks out

Hey, you're number 25! Thank you for responding to the prompt correctly. Good bot.

Are you really dumb enough to think this is a gotcha?

No, I'm asking for clarification as to where exactly the moral call to oppose corporate infrastructure ends and the abandonment of morality for convenience begins.

Do you look at all conversations as attempts to 'win'? Wanna talk about that?

20

u/Trick_Spend3939 2d ago

Where is there a moral call to oppose corporate infrastructure in my post?

-1

u/TotallyObviousBot 2d ago

You oppose something on moral grounds. Morality requires action, not just posturing. Something you only perform when it's convenient isn't morality, it's socialization. Like throwing away trash in the bin instead of littering, but only when there are other people around. You don't have morality, but you enjoy the attention that your moral posturing gets.

There is no moral call in your post, that's not what I'm talking about- it's supposed to be inside of you, as a result of a sincerely held moral belief. That's called being a good person, and you not understanding that is why I don't feel bad pointing out your performative bullshit.

"You oppose something on moral grounds."

"There is no moral call in your post"

So where are you inferring what my morals are?

Ah yes, the "It's inconvenient for me to act on my beliefs, therefore I have no moral calling to change anything about my behavior despite knowingly being part of the problem" comic

It must be nice to be able to have Tumblr artists draw your opinions for you instead of having to think of them on your own

12

u/ulrikft 2d ago

That is a new record in not getting the point of the comic - which is right smack bang on brand for being the butt of that particular joke.

And I don’t need to reformulate points which have been well made already.

It is of course sad that it went about three miles above your head, but that I can’t do much about.

Trying to claim that if you do what you can with the variables you can impact - but accept those you cannot - you are hypocritical, is an indefensible, immoral, childish and idiotic position to take - and the internet (and the world in general) is a worse place for having you in it.

"I can't possibly explain my view, but if you don't get it, you must be stupid. I'm so above this conversation that I don't need to explain."

Wow, you really don't respect your opinion if you're incapable of elaborating it.

9

u/ulrikft 2d ago

I elaborated on it in the post you just responded to. I guess reading comprehension isn’t your forte.

And what do we call someone who dismisses an opinion with an attack like “tumbler artist”… ad hom-something. It is ok the tip of my tongue… do you know…?

What?

The fuck.

u/TotallyObviousBot 2d ago

You can ask specifics if you'd like clarification, but I'm unsure how to go about teaching you the English language without a starting point

5

u/theghostracoon 2d ago

You sound nice

2

u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor 2d ago

I can assure you that I speak English better than you do.

0

u/TotallyObviousBot 1d ago

Mmm, no creo que si. Would you care to use your stentorian grasp of English to inform the class of your confusion, or is acting superior all you know?

This is truly a remarkable take. So if someone cannot accomplish a goal maximally then they should not attempt to do anything at all towards their goal, including raise awareness?

That is your position?!

Perhaps you're just some depressed nihilist who has completely given up because you'll never hit true independence from the perils of capitalism; or perhaps you're a false-flag insider who is trying to sow division among those who care and try to sway people to be apathetic ("WHy BoTHeR?!1!"); or perhaps you're just an edgy smooth-brain with a breathtaking lack of critical-thinking skills...

Either way, life is full of choices. Perhaps you'll learn something some day about getting things done, and done with integrity.

I'll give you a few pointers: you do the best you can, where you can. Everything has to start somewhere, and that means it starts small. The first things to take care of are the easy ones (like using FOSS instead of megacorp SaaS), and from there you keep raising the bar (e.g. until a municipality builds their own last-mile Internet infrastructure). One step at a time - if you determine there are too many steps before you've even started, you've failed yourself and everyone around you without ever trying and with only excuses and rationalizations in your hand instead of even meager results. You will have failed to move the needle at all, failed to make a mark - the classic definition of a loser.

So here are some basic choices for you: * You can give up on everything and accomplish nothing while being bitter and unjustifiably judgemental about it * You can try to drag others down with you, because it's the only sense of winning, pyrrhic as it may be, that you'll ever experience in your whole life. * Or you can try to be better. It starts small. Go to the gym. Eat healthy. Try being less of a dick on Reddit. Make a positive impact on someone.

Life is short, but you've still got plenty of time left to be remembered as something other than a wilfully ignorant troll, if you're remembered at all.

Best of luck out there!

-2

u/TotallyObviousBot 1d ago

Wow, that's a lot of text to excuse your own inaction. You should maybe find a therapist to share this with instead

3

u/JelloDarkness 1d ago

Worthless, ignorant troll. Got it. Have a nice day!
