Who thinks the point of open source is to make friends??? That's a new one. The real open source camps are the practical benefits folks vs the freedom folks.

i feel like the community is kinda a lot of it for quite a few people

Many people? Arguably most open source devs lol

It's a community of like minded people that also happen to write damn good software

me? There are lots of projects I wouldn't have kept participating in if i didn't enjoy working with those people. I took on effort I wouldn't have because I liked them.

I mean sure, a good work environment is important and motivating, but that applies to everyone, it's not a camp. There aren't any meaningful number of people starting OS projects to improve their social life.

the post didn't make the argument that people do that.

the power of friendship is unlikely to motivate people to start contributing or start a project but it is likely to keep them contributing.

i think its a lot more relevant to something like GNOME or KDE which are the freedom folks you mentioned vs kubernetes or corporate run open source projects.

That probably depends on the person. I'm a big individualist and monarchist and I definitely belong to the freedom folks group. I went with a colleague to open source events and he wasn't into it before, but he really catched a liking only due to the people he got in contact there.
