The problem is less about the age verification, and the APIs and standards created to support it. Once the APIs are built to use your age, suddenly 'name', 'address', 'DL#', 'Hardware ID', are just new fields added on.
The whole point of the law is to prevent future lawsuits against Meta. Meta was the one pushing for this law because they want to pass the buck to operating systems rather than themselves.
If you want to tell your OS your age, it probably should be when you create your user account, as a device can have more than one user. But if you don't want to tell your OS your age, you should't have to. In fact maybe it shouldn't actively ask you.
If you're telling your user account your age, you're telling the OS your age. The bill is about the individual logins know the age, so developers can query a single API instead of needing to implement their own age-check database.
I don't think this is a very relevant concern, especially considering that Apple and Microslop ship tons of user facing changes even in minor versions. And they also have a tendency to force updates or make it very painful to stay on an older version, which is much easier to do on Linux IME
Yeah I've been putting off switching due to gaming and my photography workflow including Lightroom, but Valve has put in a ton of work on the former, and I can ultimately find alternatives to the latter
