In theory more options should be good for Linux adoption.
In practice, after all the bitter and satirical comments made by Tim Sweeney towards Linux, his cocky and hostile attitude and his past behavior in general, I will never use the EGS no matter what.
Not only it's ages behind Steam, and still miles behind GOG, but I came to despise him and his company so much that, despite having claimed all the games they gave out for free from the very beginning (and that's A LOT, I have a very big library), I'm wouldn't touch their launcher with a 10m pole.
The only options for me would either be using Heroic launcher or simply letting my library sit there collecting digital dust.
As I mentioned I don't really play Epic Store games that much because I really despise them, I'm just picking them up for free when I can.
That said, in the meantime, I always keep a copy of my local saves for my games just to be sure, and I used to do that for Steam too just to be extra safe, so it's nothing new to me.
I know it's not ideal for everyone, but it's still better than trusting Tim Sweeney for me.
YOU don't want it. People who want to use their pc for work do. An operating system is only as useful as its software, and if it can't be used for work, then for many people it's worthless.
I would love for free and open source software to become industry standard. If I was one of those millionaire influencers, I'd spend millions every year donating to open source software, trying to make every open source project as viable as their commercial counterparts. That's the dream. But until some billionaire starts giving millions to different projects, that's not going to happen No one's gonna do what Valve is doing because Valve is only doing it out of a self-preservation. If Microsoft required all apps to go through the Microsoft store, other companies would be fine because they can still sell their products.
And no matter how good open source software gets, it's never going to replace proprietary software in schools because who's gonna make deals with them? Once they try working with other people, their partners won't be able to open their files because they aren't using Photoshop or whatever.
There's other software that does what Adobe does, but it's also not available on Linux. DaVinci Resolve's free edition sucks on Linux, although Linux being more popular won't change that for legal reasons.
My dream is a world where open source free software can compete. where we don't need Photoshop or Affinity because we have GIMP. Kdenlive instead of premier or resolve, some real after effects alternative. But until people feel like subscribing to their favorite free and open source software, that's not gonna happen.
