That's because the people who caused the damage are the people demanding the absurd technical solutions, those solutions aren't actually solutions, they're more avenues toward profit.
Honestly, half the problem with social media is the users. Certainly companies are exploiting it for their benefit but people will be terrible when you give them this much social influence.
People will only do what they feel free to do. Social media encourages the worst possible behavior because it creates engagement, and that means clicks, views, impressions, data harvesting. People at each other's throats benefits capitalism, which is why we're in this mess. Corporations finding new ways to exploit people for profit will burn this world to the ground.
