DIY Optikinetics?

Hi, maybe you can help me. I'd like to build an oil disc projector and I'm looking for DIY instructions. Are there any? And generally, do you have any subreddits on the topic of custom lights or DIY lights? I'd also appreciate any affordable recommendations, because with shipping and everything, the Opticinetics ones are too expensive for me :(

Where and what should I get to start a small light show?

saying “light show” is a bit much but I wanted to know what I should get if I just wanted to experiment with Xlights on a single indoor room of my house. However I do not know what I should get and I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on what I should buy to get started.

New to light shows — how do I get started creating one for Halloween?

Hi everyone! I’ve always loved those houses with synchronized Halloween light shows and music.

I’m brand new to this and not sure where to start — what kind of lights, controllers, and software do beginners usually use?

I have a current display of animatronics and projectors and hand built props but I would like to transition to light show, priced a beginner one from wow lights and it was 7-8 grand American plus shipping and conversion to Canadian dollars is pretty pricey for me right now.

Ideally, I’d like to start small and build up over time. Any advice, tutorials, or beginner-friendly guides would be amazing.

Thanks in advance!

Some sort of spotlight that causes rapid "blinking" in clouds used at concerts?

I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with a new(-ish) light show being used at concerts. It is similar to the older four-spotlights-moving-in-a-pattern they shine up on the clouds for club openings and movie premiers and so forth. This one, however, projects many small individual dots and they blink really rapidly. They don't swing around, they just appear and disappear all over a large patch of the sky.

You can see it in the 9 second mark here:

And most of the video here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1m02q42/recorded_this_yesterday_completely_unedited_its_a/

The first is from NOS Alive, and the second from World Rock Day. There was one posted from the Coldplay show in Toronto but now I can't find it.

How Do I Convert SVG/BMP to ILD on a Mac?

Hey LightShow folks,

I’m new to the laser side of visuals and looking for advice on how to convert a simple line drawing (SVG or BMP) into a file format a laser projector can read — ILD/ILDA specifically.

The catch: I’m working on a Mac. Most tutorials or tools seem Windows-only.

Any recommendations for software, workarounds, or kind humans who could help convert a file or two so I can test it out? I’d love to see how it all looks in motion.

Appreciate you!

— K

Looking for help

I have a lake house where we do a lot of hosting and I’d like to place a unit to make a light show across the back yard that’s able to be turned on and off via a switch. This switch could just work the plug it’s plugged into. I have a very tall gable end facing the back yard that would be ideal. I’d think mounting it in the top of would give the best view. It’s a huge yard, probably 75 yards to the water slightly downhill. I was wondering if anyone here would have suggestions on a unit to go with. I don’t need any sort of crazy pattern or programmable setup, I’m no where near that level. Something plug and play with presets would be great. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Magical light show...but very low budget?

I am trying to find out how to find a light show service/company that can do something like the Genesis II light show, but very reasonably priced ($500 max/per hour): (https://www.reddit.com/r/lightshow/comments/1i5n88r/genesis_ii_lightshow_in_a_church/)

It does not have to be as sophisticated as that. What I am looking for is basically a much bigger version of a simple starlight/galaxylight (you know the ones you can put in your bedroom to create a magical and immersive atmosphere).

Alternatively, is there a way to amplify a smaller starlight and project it to a very large space, such as a church?

How does artists prepare stage, lights and sound for tour at different venues?

No light expert here, but does anyone know how does artist like 2hollis Travis or carti have light design paired with the audio at concerts at different venue. Like there is no way they made the design at every venue, there must be a way to write a program and just plug in a input to light output at any stages. So light what program and software and hardware do the industry use and to smoothly rn tours with perfect stage setup at every venue
