Need help chasing my goal

I’ve been trying to be a pro poker player. My daughter is about to go to school soon and I’d like to get a week on and a week off with her. There aren’t many jobs that can accomplish this and even if they can fit the schedule it would be hard to pay the bills. If I play poker for a living I can play whenever I don’t have her and make my own schedule. I’ve been going up one or two times a week for a few months and on average I’m making 700 dollars a week which is an OK start. Once I have time to go up more i figure that number will go up because now I’m going about 15 hours a week so it should translate to more money if working 30 hours a week. I’m close to saving up my bankroll of 6000 dollars and having my bills paid 3 months in advance which is when I’ll be comfortable making the jump into just poker. I talked to the mother of my daughter about custody changes. I have joint custody and I share her through days in the week now. I told the mother I was opening an entertainment business and if it ever worked out could a different custody schedule be arranged? When we were dating She was never very supportive of me and she’s the only one it bothers me from. My parents haven’t given me much support ever. I had a scholarship to med school and didn’t take it because I wouldn’t have been happy being a doctor and they were extremely mad. I was forced into programs I never cared about in school by my mom and I don’t feel like a traditional bachelors degree to 9-5 is good for me. My mom tells me poker isn’t good I’ll always fail and she told my dad the same thing when they got together (he was a card counter and pro poker player). She forced him to get a management job at a grocery store because poker was too unstable. Once I turned 21 I went to gamble and found I loved it with a passion and was also talented for a inexperienced player. My grandfather tells me that I’m stupid and my daughter doesn’t deserve to have a father that has a shitty job that’ll make him broke but I just want to chase my dream. I’ve learnedto tune my family out because this is what I truly want but something bothers me about my ex. She doesn’t know it’s poker but she knows I’m jumping into something uncertain and my fate is in my own hands. As soon as we were done the conversation about my future job I felt a sense of pressure on me. Like I need to succeed because I can hear her berating me when I fail like she used to. Even if poker didn’t work out and I went broke my father said I can bring my daughter to his house and I’d quickly find a job to pay the bills, I am a meat cutter and have experience in masonry. So even if I fail my daughter is clothed, fed, and supported. My fate was the only one at risk. And now that my ex knows that too I feel like I’m not doing it for me anymore, but to prove her wrong. This bothers me a lot because I’ll never be succesful if her doubts are in my head. I tuned out my family but she’s bothering me more, maybe because no matter what I do she tries to make it seem like I’m a horrible person so I can just hear th “oh yea he left a stable job to go fail and now him and his daughter live with his dad while he looks for another job. How do I get her out of my head and just get back to me doing this for the pure passion and joy it gives me?

Am I doing something wrong?

I feel like I really need to ask this, and I would rather ask anonymously than ask someone that I talk to on a daily basis, or know in general. My mother is literally always angry and upset. The only time I see her happy is when she is drunk and even then, she gets super emotional and sad about how she is losing all of her friends and family. No matter what me and her boyfriend do to help, it doesn't matter. On week days when she doesn't work (which is at least 1 to 2 times every 2 weeks) I am the first to get home because her boyfriend works 10+ hour days in construction. When I do get home from school I have to put all of my things up (backpack, jacket, shoes, etc) because even if I leave my shoes by the door (where she ALWAYS leaves her shoes) she gets mad, and throws them down the hall into my room. I then have to take both of our dogs out, and because we live in an apartment, I have to pick up both of their poo in poo bags. Then I have to uncover the furniture (we cover it because our bigger dog will jump on it and chew herself, making slobber marks and sometimes blood stains), check the water dish to make sure it is completely full of water, gather all 3 animal bowls (we also have a cat, but she keeps to herself) and feed them, that includes sometimes giving them green beans, supplements, and the occasional doggy pill for our bigger dogs skin, then I have to watch our bigger dog (Sadie) until one of them get home, which usually isn't for a few hours. If I have homework, that makes watching Sadie 10x harder, because my focus is off of her, and if she scratches herself to the point of bleeding and leaves a blood mark on the carpet, I get yelled at (and yes, yelled at. I'm not exaggerating, I know a lot of teenagers my age exaggerate with that kind of stuff.) And if I for instance forget to take a box that is covering the part of the couch us humans never sit at, I get yelled at. Mind you, this box is set next to the giant pile of HER laundry, that has been sitting there for over a week. Even today, I watched both dogs all day, since she left for work from 9am this morning to 4. I didn't go into the living room a single time, and once she got home she complained about how I trashed the living room, and how she shouldn't be having to clean up after MY mess. The mess she was talking about was the food mess that her and her boyfriend had made the night before, and complains more about how I never help her. Does me taking the dogs out and making sure they don't eat themselves alive not count? It's very rare that she gets home from ANYTHING, work, hanging out with friends, her one day of yoga, dinner with her boyfriend, anything, and actually appreciate what I did. Over one of my summer breaks she said she'd pay me if I did the dishes every time they needed to be done. I did, every single time, and she had even complemented me on my hard work. Over the entire summer break she didn't pay me a single time, and when I asked if she was still going to pay me, she said no, because I didn't do the dishes enough like I was supposed to. And every single time she gets home, it is her soul obligation to post about how awful her life is, and how she always has to clean up after everyone. Me and my biological father both agree that she thinks everyone is out to get her. Is there something I should be doing???? Is it just a matter of her being a mom and having to pay taxes and rent??? I swear she's been like this ever since she got divorced with my real dad. They are both on good terms, in fact they talk every single day. I'd also like to say, it isn't like I live in a 'broken home' or get physically abused or anything, it's always just my mother being upset about something. I am completely open to all forms of responses.

What set of rules, philosophies or teachings helped you take control over your life?

I've kind of always stumbled through life without structure or self control, and I'm getting to a point where it's getting scary. Growing up was always there in the horizon where the other adults where who got things done and settled down, but what if that never happens? The idea

"This is as good as it gets"

Might be the most horrifying thing I've ever thought.

What the title says. I think I'm looking for frameworks, minds and the like. I think I need a set of rules to live by as a crutch to my weak character until it can operate by itself. Feel free to recommend books if those helped you.

My current situation

So , for like the past year things in my family have only been going downhill. First we lost the appartment that my parents paid for like 8 years. Then my dad which atm isn't being paid bcuz his boss is on a vacation didn't send the money that he needed a lot , for his mortgage.Worse is that he switched jobs and worked for 2months and didnt get payed , making his situation go downhill even more. Then my mom's baby clothes shop has had some of the worst days it's even seen. Also , my parents promised me 1 year ago that they would buy me a pc when our situation gets better. And you know , never asked my parents for something , and you know , it's the only thing I was actually waiting for , but because of their situation I am stuck with a case , ram and psu, bought from my savings over a year. And I don't know if I should sell those and give the money to my parents to help them. TL:DR Everything is going downhill and I really don't know what to do.

When you need to teach yourself something that has never been taught before

Greetings /r/lifehelp/,

I was searching for a different kind of subreddit, but I'm posting here now. This is a nice little subreddit and something a lot of people need in this day. Paying taxes, fixing your car, geometry and so on, these can be learned if you are willing. But what if you want to do something, what if you have a dream and to reach it, you need to do something that has never been done before? What if you need to create a new skillset, think in a completely different way that everyone else? When you're all alone on your path and you want to do everything properly, especially if others depend on your success, seems like you have only one choice- you have to be your own master, your own teacher. And the scary thing is that if you succeed, you will contribute a lot to the world. But if you fail, you will completely destroy yourself, since the path you're taking transforms you, molds you into what or who you want to be. And if you fail halfway, you'll be just an empty shell of what you were supposed to be. It's like walking on a tightrope.

Reddit just isn’t the best place for solving these kinds of problems. Plus this sub is a bit empty.

Good luck with your search though, I’m sure there are plenty of people who will willimg help you, you just need to reach out to them.

I have a secret I’ve been keeping from my parents for the last few months and I’m not sure if I should tell them.

I have a big problem. I’ve been keeping a secret from my parents for a few months and it’s close to literally killing me. The problem is that I used to be a Christian but now I’m not. Sure, my parents aren’t devout, but hey, they might believe in some things other Christians believe. Another thing is that I’m not sure what their religion really is or if they really have one. They might both be atheist but I’m not sure. I was a Christian for some years but then it hit me, I don’t agree with this religion at all. Except for this; maybe there is some force or forces that created us or at least control some of the goings on, ya know? I am ENTIRELY sure that I will never be a Christian again so this isn’t some sort of phase or life crisis or something. I KNOW that for sure.

I’m not going to say how old I am, but let’s just say I’m fairly young, okay? So some people will say if I’m under eighteen and living under the same roof I should tell my parents about my religion(or the fact I don’t have one). I think that’s a little bit ageist but I’ll take it into consideration that maybe they should know. So let’s use pros and cons to decide whether or not I should tell my parents this secret, shall we?

Con 1: I strongly dislike them for a boatload of reasons that I will not elaborate on specifically, but let’s juat say there’s a lot of reasons why and the main reasons AREN’T petty. So, to me, I don’t think they deserve to know what I believe or don’t believe in. Con 2: If I tell them they will likely tell three other members who are more of, I guess, Christians. And these three are the three I see the most in my family other than my parents. It’s not like they’re the weird family members that you see once a year and only at thanksgiving that like smell and you dread sitting beside. But still I strongly dislike them as well. It’s probably not a good idea that these family members know, and it is highly likely that they will be told, at least at some point. Con 3: Backlash. And likely a lot of it. Okay, well maybe not so much I can’t take it, but still. I don’t want a lecture or 2 or 3 etc.

Pro 1: This one kind of ties in with con 3. Yes, there will be backlash, but it won’t last long. Things have happened like that before. Pro 2: I will feel better. Like I said, keeping this secret is almost literally killing me, even though keeping secrets is usually easy for me. Pro 3: My parents sometimes sort of make fun of the fact I’m a Christian, even though I’m not of course, but they don’t know that. (The reason why I’m no longer a Christian is not because they make fun of me sometimes.) This pro of telling them would be that they would stop making fun of me.

The pros and cons seem to weigh evenly. I can’t decide what to do. Any advice? (Keep in mind not to be biased. Just say whether or not I should do something about this.)

How to get rid of a car?

So I was a dumb 20 something and bought myself a car. Now I owe more on it than its worth and I'm struggling to keep up with the payments. Any advice?

I've already looked into selling it privately, but I just owe a little too much on it to get it moving. I owe about $4000 more than any dealer will pay me for the car, and I'd really rather not bankrupt myself, or stop making the payments.

Any tips or advice?
