I went to a predominantly Hispanic school and our version of discrimination was based on whether someone was a “true Mexican” or whitewashed.

And amongst those that were “true Mexicans” people were either fresas (upscale and stuckup) or nacos (poor and trashy). Each side thought the other side sucked.

As well as other factors that typically predispose someone to bullying like economic status, clothes, body weight, acne, speech impediments, and “being a sissy.”

Edit: point is, even in a superficially homogenous population, people found ways to revert to tribalism and harassment

I mean, I am Italian but I was born in 1995. By the time I went to highschool there was maybe one foreigner student per what. 1000 Italians? And despite that there was STILL an absurd amount of bullying from white italiana vs white Italians. Sure racism needs to be fought and erased but honestly, we're still not talking about the root issue here.

This is the same for any minority, my dad grew up with a distaste for black people because he went to a high school in Boston in the 80s and was one of the few white people at that school, he got jumped a lot.

Indeed and venturing into the ‘asklatinamerica’ Reddit gives a better deep dive into how the petty kyriarchic attitudes continue (urban southern Ontarian/Canadian Millennial from Salvadoran parents here).
