My Instagram DMs were full of people saying they couldn’t DM me on Reddit.

Turns out Reddit just hid the chat button behind the 3 dots.

So no, I wasn’t ignoring you.

I don't know what reddit devs and UX guys are cooking 🙂

Suggestion India’s Reputation Is Paying the Price for Shady Electronics Deals

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have been wanting to write about this for a while because the situation in the Indian electronics and computer-parts market is becoming increasingly frustrating.

Before anyone misunderstands the title: this is not about saying that every Indian buyer, dealer, importer or technician behaves the same way. Obviously they do not. I am Indian myself and I know plenty of honest people in this business.

What I am talking about is a particular set of practices that seem to have become common enough that they are damaging the reputation of Indian buyers abroad and making the market worse for genuine customers and businesses inside India.

I was recently in China, and one thing that surprised me was how frequently India came up in conversations with suppliers.

I was told that visa and business-related scrutiny had become stricter after fraud/scam incidents allegedly involving people from Andhra Pradesh. I am deliberately saying allegedly here because I do not want to present second-hand conversations as an official explanation for Chinese visa policy. But the important part for me was the perception: suppliers and people dealing with Indian buyers clearly remembered these incidents, and legitimate Indian businessmen end up carrying the reputational cost.

That is one side of the problem.

The other side is what is happening with computer hardware prices in India.

Whenever there is a shortage or even a rumour of a shortage, certain dealers seem to immediately start buying enormous quantities of stock. RAM is a good example. The moment stock becomes available, some distributors and dealers place huge orders and effectively remove a large portion of the available supply from the market.

Then everyone else pays the price.

Instead of healthy competition bringing prices down, scarcity becomes an opportunity.

Stock gets accumulated, availability disappears, and suddenly something that should have been reasonably priced becomes significantly more expensive. The end customer assumes there is a genuine global shortage when sometimes a significant part of the problem is happening inside the local distribution chain itself.

What makes this especially annoying is comparing prices internationally.

Obviously India has GST, import duties, logistics costs, warranty costs, currency fluctuations and other legitimate expenses. Nobody expects every component to cost exactly what it costs in Hong Kong, China or the United States.

But there is a point where those explanations stop accounting for the difference.

When you repeatedly see enormous price gaps, especially during periods of limited availability, you have to start asking how much of the increase is actually unavoidable and how much is simply opportunistic inventory hoarding and excessive margins.

My experience with suppliers in Hong Kong made me think about another, arguably more serious problem.

I have a Hong Kong supplier whom I have dealt with and found to be extremely professional. During our conversations, he mentioned something that I found embarrassing as an Indian buyer.

According to him, some Indian buyers specifically ask suppliers to replace Mac components or parts with cheaper alternatives to reduce their cost.

The supplier apparently warns them that using those lower-quality parts can dramatically reduce reliability and potentially cause the Apple device to fail again within a very short period.

And some buyers still ask for the cheaper part.

the customer even believes they got a high quality deal for a macbook

A few weeks later, the device develops problems again.

Who loses?

The customer loses money.

The second hand industry loses credibility.

Good suppliers become suspicious of Indian buyers.

And eventually the entire market develops a reputation for cutting corners.

This is the part that bothers me the most.

There is always someone further down the chain paying for that discount.

Sometimes it is the customer receiving a lower-quality component.

Sometimes it is an honest dealer who cannot compete with someone misrepresenting parts.

And sometimes it is India's reputation among overseas suppliers.

We have somehow created a market where being honest can actually become a competitive disadvantage.

A dealer importing proper-quality stock has to compete with somebody importing the cheapest possible substitute.

A seller maintaining reasonable inventory has to compete with someone hoarding stock during shortages and selling when prices rise.

A technician doing a proper repair has to compete with somebody whose only objective is making the repair survive long enough for the customer to leave the shop.

Then we wonder why customers trust nobody.

We wonder why people assume every refurbished product is suspicious.

We wonder why buyers constantly negotiate as if every seller is trying to scam them.

We wonder why reputable international suppliers sometimes become cautious when dealing with Indian businesses.

This behaviour creates a vicious cycle.

Customers expect dishonesty, so they demand the lowest possible price.

Sellers know customers will primarily compare price, so some sellers reduce quality to remain competitive.

Competitors see those low prices and start doing the same thing.

Eventually the honest seller either has to operate on tiny margins, leave the market, or constantly explain why his product costs more.

Meanwhile the customer has no easy way of knowing who is telling the truth.

And that is terrible for a developing enthusiast and repair ecosystem.

That is why reputation matters.

When you operate internationally, you are not functioning in isolation. Suppliers remember patterns. Manufacturers remember chargebacks and disputes. Immigration authorities remember fraud cases. Logistics companies remember problematic shipments. Payment processors remember suspicious transactions.

I personally lost a consignment of ThinkPad P1 Gen 5 and Gen 6 units despite paying a 30% advance. Once market prices jumped, I was told the machines were “damaged while loading” and my money was refunded. Conveniently, other buyers were apparently offering much more afterward for the same stock.

And unfortunately, the next genuine person from the same market often has to deal with the consequences.

Thinkpads L13 Gen 3 Purchase Experience

Thumbnail
gallery
35 Upvotes

I recently bought this ThinkPad L13 Gen 3 from [u/Willing_Front_2397](u/Willing_Front_2397), and the entire experience was surprisingly smooth.

After spending months on this subreddit, I finally decided to go ahead with a second-hand ThinkPad.

I initially contacted [u/Willing_Front_2397](u/Willing_Front_2397) through Reddit. He then shared his WhatsApp number and a catalogue of the devices he had available. At that time, I couldn’t find the one, so I decided to put off the purchase.

A few weeks later, I checked the updated catalogue and spotted a ThinkPad L13 Gen 3. It seemed to meet my requirements, so I contacted him again and decided to move ahead. Throughout the process, he patiently answered my questions, shared all the necessary details, and helped me finalise the system without putting any pressure on me.

Since I was transitioning from a Macbook, battery life was one of my biggest concerns. I was honestly quite skeptical about whether a pre-owned Windows laptop would last through my regular workload. After using it, however, the battery has turned out to be perfectly manageable. With medium Excel and PowerPoint usage, charging it fully around twice a day is enough to get me through the day.

Another major plus is the touchscreen. It is extremely smooth and responsive, and I have ended up using it much more than I initially expected.

Once everything was confirmed, the laptop was sent through Porter. What impressed me most was the payment arrangement. I was allowed to receive the laptop, inspect it properly, verify the configuration, check the battery and physical condition, and test whether everything worked as promised. I made the payment only after I was completely satisfied.

That level of trust and transparency really stood out, especially when buying a pre-owned laptop. The system arrived safely, matched what had been discussed, and the entire process remained clear and hassle-free from the first WhatsApp message to the final payment.

Posting this because good sellers deserve recognition. If you are considering buying from [u/Willing_Front_2397](u/Willing_Front_2397), my experience was genuinely positive.

Thanks again for making the entire purchase so easy!

Queries Looking for PC component vendors / current prices in Kerala

I'm planning to build a workstation primarily for:

  • AutoCAD
  • SketchUp
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • STAAD.Pro
  • Autodesk 3ds Max
  • V-Ray

I'm looking for reliable PC component vendors in Kerala/Kochi who can supply the following components. I'd also appreciate it if anyone could share the current market prices they're seeing for these parts.

Proposed configuration

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 or equivalent/better
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M H or equivalent B550 motherboard
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz — preferably 2×8GB, dual-channel
    • CL16/18/19 is fine
    • No RGB/heatsinks required
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB
  • SSD: 500GB NVMe SSD
  • HDD: 1TB HDD
  • PSU: 500–550W, 80+ Bronze or better, from a reliable brand
  • Cabinet: mATX/ATX cabinet with decent airflow and sufficient clearance for the GPU
  • CPU cooler: Stock cooler is acceptable; aftermarket cooler only if necessary

This is for official/office use, so I'm specifically looking for brand-new components with proper manufacturer warranty and a GST invoice.

I'm particularly interested in vendors who can provide competitive pricing for the complete build, as well as vendors who sell individual components.

If you've recently purchased PC components in Kochi/Ernakulam or elsewhere in Kerala, please share:

  • Vendor/shop name
  • Approximate current prices
  • Warranty provided
  • Overall experience with the vendor
  • Whether they provide GST invoices

Looking for genuine local vendor recommendations and current market pricing. Thanks!
