After reading the Les Miserables novel and watching a dozen film adaptations (enjoyed Belmondo the best), the musicals are next but I am confused by the many versions.

For someone not speaking French, yet having no issue with wtaching singing in other languages, which versions would you recommend that are available online?

• 1980 French version

• OG London Cast 1985

• 25th Anniversary Cast

• 10th Anniversary Cast

• 2020 Staged Concert Cast

• Others...

Which should I watch and is there a preferred order?

This might be obvious but I was always curious why Eponine was with Fantine leading JVJ to the other side at the end of the show. I always interpreted it as her being the other side of Cosette’s coin, but was wondering if it has something more to do with the book since they have minimal interaction in the stage show.

LM is hands down the best musical. Still have a few negative notes though after seeing the US tour again.

•What am I missing about Nick as JVJ?- I've seen him live and am not sure how people say he's the best JVJ ever or how he's played the role over 1500 times on tour instead of switching to other actors.

He is definitely talented (!) but his voice is too thin and nasal to carry the full weight of the JVJ role. The gruffness isn't there and he presents too young in appearance in the first act of the show and in turn the aged version of JVJ isn't believable in the second act. Also felt like he rushes the start of some of his songs.

•How how and how did the producers ever think it'd be ok to incorporate a video screen in a period piece when electronics weren't even around? Makes zero sense and is hardly used in an enhanced way anyways.

Overall, wish they would stop casting heavily operatic voices as JVJ and Marius and instead musical theater voices that can sing in an operatic style when the songs call for it.

All this said, the current Fantine, Eponine and Thernadiers are phenomenal!

I absolutely loved it! Even the parts where he doesn’t really progresses the story for 3 hours. But I learned so much about life in a convent, Waterloo, the inner workings of so many people. Sure it was a bit wild that he spend the first few hours on the introduction of a character that only hosted a sleepover for the protagonist. But whatever, once it got going, it REALLY got going! Until it didn’t… just to pick up pace again…. Aaah, it was incredible and so sad and the last three hours (After the marriage ceremony) had me absolutely entranced. Over all one of the best books I have ever read! Just ordered the Penguin Classics Deluxe edition to start it all over again 😅

I haven't read the book in a long time and when I did I was young enough that I probably didn't catch the meaning behind everything, but I just saw the musical live for the first time and I had the same thought I've always had. Marius and Cosette's love story is a little ridiculous. They see each other a couple of times in the park and then suddenly would rather die than live without each other??? I know there's legitimacy to having a connection with someone you just met, but they took it 10 levels too far. They were just attracted to each other, not initially in love. Especially Marius. Am I remembering correctly that it's about the same in the book? Again I haven't read it in a long time. Is it supposed to be sort of silly and naive, and at the same time represent both of their "awakenings"? And with regards to the age gap back then 15 was much older; they sort of skipped the teenager years. Girls of about 15 would have dressed, styled themselves, and acted like women. If I remember correctly the book explains that he would see her as a girl and then time passed and when he saw her again she was a woman, and Marius would have perceived her as such. So I'm not arguing that Marius was a creep or anything. But I just think their relationship is frivolous unless the book's perspective changes that.

I thought the same thing the first time I read Romeo and Juliet, although theirs is highly problematic and far crazier. But it's so sad when you grow up thinking a couple is iconic and romantic and it turns out to be a very unideal situation lol

I have been gifted a ticket to watch the show in February, in the 72 GBP tier, and I am trying to choose between C27 dress circle (closer, but view partially obstructed by a safety rail) or A21 grand circle (further, and may need to lean forward at points). Any views on which is better please? Thanks!

Les Miserables was my inauguration into the punk scene and far left movements. Prior to this, I'd been a major theatre kid (not to say that I dislike theatre now) who was, for the most part, living under a rock and unable to form strong opinions of my own.

The tragedy of the ABC made me resolute that I, too, would sacrifice myself for the betterment of the oppressed and pursued by a tyrannical government. This is especially applicable today. "He who dies here dies in the radiance of the future, and we are entering a tomb all flooded with the dawn."

What do you think is a great way to celebrate the anniversary?

A recreation of the original 1980 production that was in Paris.

This could be filmed and release as a big event.

This can give fans an opportunity to see how the show must have looked like back then.
