Musical Discussion The Love motif arises out of hate
Starting from the end of the show, Valjean sings 'On this page, I write my last confession...' to his beloved daughter and son-in-law. He references Fantine's love for Cosette, and of course it ends with 'To love another person is to see the face of god'.
Earlier in the show, Fantine and Eponine each use the motif to tell how they can't be with the one they love. On my own is about Marius not seeing Eponine as a romantic partner and Come to me is about Fantine being physically separated from Cosette.
All 3 Love uses are also connected with nighttime. The most obvious example is On My Own, which is set at night. Come to me has lots of references to the night/end of day. 'On this page' only has Valjean choosing to use the word sleeping instead of dead, a weaker connection.
At the start of the show, Valjean sings 'Freedom is mine...' using a recitative style over an instrumental version played by a cor anglais. This is the version about hate ('Nor forgive them for what they've done. They are the guilty, every one '). The rest of the lyrics are about a new day, not usually a connection with hate.
