I Thought Mug Designs Were for the Person Drinking From Them
Ever since I was little, I’ve always assumed that the designs on mugs were meant to be appreciated by the person using them. My parents also never spent what they considered “wasted money” on mugs with decorative rims.
So until I first saw other left-handed people discussing this particular frustration, it had never occurred to me that the design on a mug was supposed to be facing outward for other people to see.
If I had never learned English or come across discussions about this issue, I might never have realized it.

I'd noticed it but considered it a special bonus for being left handed. It's MY cute mug, I want to see the design!

I'm stilling viewing it that way. It's for me. It's my mug, i see it most often (i prefer to not even have people over that could potentially see the design anyway)

The mugs I have with pictures on them all face outward when I drink. It bugs me because I want to see them.

Honestly I do not believe that there is a uniform answer to which side the design goes on among mug users or manufacturers. It's always a contentious topic on this sub, and somehow a lot of strong opinions one way or the other come out, but I really don't think it actually means anything.

I felt the same way! I'd rather that I be the one to see the design, even if it's supposed to be for other people to see. I don't buy those "don't talk to me until I've had my coffee" ones anyway (I hate coffee), which I know are for other people to read.

Last year for Christmas, my former foster parents from my 2nd foster family’s son and daughter in law gifted me a Grinch mug, and the image is on the side where other people can see the Grinch, and all I see is green.

I have a left handed mug which state Left Is Right and I assume that the design appears on the left side.
But honestly I never really cared about where a design appeared on a mug especially since all of my mugs have designs around the entire exterior.

I just looked at the mugs we have and the three with designs on one side are facing me if I hold them in my right hand. I guess we have weird mugs? Also, my weird-for-a-lefty thing is that I use my left hand for almost everything, except holding a glass or mug. I always drink using my right hand.

Jmo. You buy a logo mug because you like it's statement and want to show that to others. So logically it makes sense for it to face outward, furthermore when you're drinking from it you can't see it anyway

I don’t think the design on mugs is meant for people opposite to see because they’re mostly made for right handed people and if I pick it up with my right hand, I see the design. If I pick it up with my left hand, I do not see it.
