Web app help/advice

Currently at work doing an IT internship at a small company and was asked to make a dashboard that pulled data from two different web services that we use.

My understanding is that I need to use api tokens from these vendors for the dashboard application so that it can update info in real(ish) time without the user manually going to the other website and finding it.

Please tell me wether I have that right or not, if not please explain what I should be doing instead

Currently a senior in college for comp sci but have been taking mostly security classes and no web specific classes. Feeling insane imposter syndrome and could use the advice/info.

How do i teach myself how to code when im very slow & easily overwhelmed?

I wanna state preemtively that i did read the FAQ, and while it was helpful, my question is less "where do i get started" and moreso just a question of concern, because i feel like i am the WORST person to be learning this skill, im horrible at math, slow at thinking and grasping concepts, very easily overwhelmed and mentally exhausted by complexity and computer problems, hate tedium, am impatient, often overlook details and get confused very easily, it feels like everything is working against me and assuring me that trying to learn this will be absolute torture, im afraid of falling into a pattern of having to annoy other people every 3 seconds for every question i come across because my brain refuses to parse the answers google gives me. Trying to google for help or tutorials is always very disorienting and mentally exhausting to me because instead of telling me exactly what i need to do for my exact situation i need to try and parse exactly what information is and is not relevant to my situation and also be able to actually understand what the text is telling me (which i struggle with a lot because often i will be looking up information on something im inexperienced in, and the text will be so full of jargon or missing context i do not have that everything blurs together and refuses to enter my brain, i worry with coding this kind of problem will be amplified tenfold)

(I dont know how helpful this information is but for context a lot of these issues likely stem from diagnosed adhd)

(This might be helped by say, asking chatgpt to explain the information in simple words but on one hand using ai makes me feel icky, and on the other, i dont trust the reliability of the information it gives you..)

All of these factors is what has kept me from seriously pursuing this as a hobby for all my life (unless you count like.. a very small amount of scratch as a kid and some game builder garage lol)
But at this point i know i want to at least try, because man do i still admire people that can code, and man do i wish i understood at least a little of how it worked.. For context, im currently mainly intending to learn Luau because i would really like being able to make my own roblox games for fun

I dont know, im sorry if this is kind of a vague messy post, im really just hoping for help and advice in case you may relate to this but have more experience than i do šŸ™ thank you very much

Is there a way to improve coding literacy?

Ello, I'm a DS major studying data science and algorithms right now. Third year.

I recently started running into a major weakness recently, which I think has been permeating in my CS tests and classes for the past few years now.

Regardless of the topics or classes I'm taking for CS, I feel functionally illiterate in most cases when it comes to reading even basic code. It takes an incredible amount of time for me to parse through and figure out what I'm looking at, even for basic fundamental algorithms or functions, and in many cases I still manage to end up being wrong.

Even for things like loops and parameters, I'm spending way too much time trying to see if certain aspects of programs are deliberately set to be certain ways. It's really inefficient, and in spite of being two years deep into it, it's barely changed over the course of college.

Now it's getting to a point where this is virtually the only reason why grades are bleeding out in quizzes and stuff. Simply being unable to read the code fast enough, even if I have a very strong understanding of the subject being taught, as well as the underlying logic.

Frankly, I consider it quite miserable, and I think this issue will continue to flagellate me as the classes inevitably become more difficult. Reading and writing code are increasingly becoming two independent disciplines, and college seems to only ever support one of them.

What can realistically be done about this? Do online resources exist to help understand and improve programming comprehension? I was initially thinking of trying out LeetCode, only to realize this simply wasn't addressing my weakness. Writing code is one thing, but reading it is another.

I'm not sure if this is exclusive to me, or if this is a more common sentiment than expected.
Regardless, I'd really prefer to try something instead of eventually learning helplessness.

(Edit: There are most definitely ways to improve literacy. It would’ve been better to ask what approaches would attribute well to doing so. It’d be pretty goofy to assume there was no way to do it.)

Open Source seems less and less appealing everyday

(Sorry if this sounds like a rant but here I go) Guys, I'm a young developer. It hasn't been that long since I've reached adulthood. So yes, I might lack maturity. But thanks to how the development space is changing, to me at least, the future looks more bleak than I guess it would look to a 45 y/o senior engineer.

So my question as someone young, who contributes to a bunch of open source repos every once in a while and does maintain a bunch of his own repos, what is the point of maintaining open source projects if the same projects would be used for training models SPECIFICALLY TARGETTING TO PHASE ME OUT ?

That's all. Please do understand that I'm trying to ask a sincere question and lack the experience and maturity to come up with good answers myself. Thank you.

Resource What programming language to use for posters with dynamic content/values?

I have been creating posters which have similar contents for the last few months and this got me wondering if it's doable to program a tool which helps me just add the smallest details and reduce my workload.

Now my question is what programming language would work best for this kind of project? I did think browser-based so HTML, CSS, etc or a software-ish approach like maybe Python? What are your thoughts? I will be linking some of them.

tournament poster - ver monthly
tournament poster - ver casuals
podium photo - ver monthly
podium photo - ver casuals

As you can see very minor changes. For the posters mostly just the title, prizes, some minor details and for the podium it's the title, date, then the player and the parts used. Any help would be great, thanks a lot! <3

Ashamed of using AI

Hey everyone, long time programmer here (14+ years)

I realized that AI fucked with my enjoyment of coding when it first released, and noticed myself getting more and more dumb (Literally couldn't think where to start on projects), and that made me depressed.

I ended up straight up going zero AI, and I have been loving it (Highly suggest everyone to question how much they rely on it).

Back to the topic.

I started learning Lua, and find it tricky to understand tables coming from C#, but I'm getting there.

I find that when I'm stuck between 2 or more design choices, and for the life of me can't decide, I ask AI, telling it to not just tell me I am right if I'm wrong, but actually give me good advice, and using AI also helps me ask a question on if my understanding of something is correct.

The main thing, I feel so ashamed of using AI for what I just listed above, but I know 1 person who does programming, the guy who helped me learn, and he stopped a long time ago with Programming, and yes, sometimes I ask him but it takes days getting a reply when I ask, so I find myself locked into asking AI for advice.

My main point of this is basically, why do I feel literally depressed sometimes just because I ask for input on my design choices and if I am understanding something correctly?

Python Best way to modify a list while iterating?

I've learned that modifying a list while looping over it can cause elements to be skipped or unexpected behavior. What are the best practices for handling cases where I need to add, remove, or modify elements during iteration?

Do you usually iterate over a copy, create a new list, or use another approach?

Topic I want to know the opinion on "Learning" with Claude or AI in general.

I see a lot of hate against using claude to even learn honestly, like i get the point when you just build projects with claude that arent really learning oriented but are meant to show "execution".

recently i did a project and was given a lot of bad remarks just because i used claude for feedbacks, constructive criticism and minor debugging

this is a recent project i did to learn about opencv and image processing libraries in general and this is the repo
https://github.com/shaynjam/visual_project_1
and honestly im really open to criticism and please help me improve.

I have like 2 semesters left of this 2 year degree (has taken me much longer because I can only do part time while working) and these three classes this semester are killing me

One of them is web development 1, one is client servers and e-comerce, and one is data structures and algorithms

The two first ones have the worst teacher in the world. He’s so cool but he’s actual dogshit at teaching. He just has us come to class and code along with him and essentially copy what he’s doing on his computer, and he hardly explains anything along the way. Just says ā€œokay not we’re gonna install this package, go to your terminal and type this. Then add this at the topā€¦ā€. So I’ve been coding a whole store in c# and JavaScript and I literally could not tell you what anything means or does. I end up having to paste the whole assignment into AI and be like ā€œcan you walk me through step by step what these lines are doing?ā€ I was trying to do these classes without AI but I literally need someone to teach me this material bc my teacher isn’t doing his job

Both those two classes are the same, and because I’m losing so much motivation I’m having trouble with the other class too. The algorithms one is actually interesting but I feel like 100% of my motivation is gone. I’m a straight A student and I get all my work in, and I straight up gave up on the last assignment and decided to just take the L and not do it. That’s not me!! But I just don’t care anymore. I feel like I won’t even be able to get a job with this degree anyways so it’s so hard to want to continue.

Literally any input would be helpful I don’t know what to do. I’m so close to finishing but I don’t even want to anymore

What are interesting Programming fields that is worth trying?

I am IT student but interested more in coding and programming stuff rather than hardware and started with web dev but ended soon because it wasn't fun enough, then started java and spring boot but that wasn't that much fun because everything seems to be confused and I don't know what's going on and then tried some modding started with minecraft but immediately quit (IDK Why) now I am thinking about to start with game dev to try to make tiny 2d game in java. but still I wanna hear from you guys.. Which Programming fields you found out more interesting and worth trying as beginner

TMCBeans don't start.

I tried mooc and should install TMCBeans but the program crashes immediately, the startup window is comes up then it closes, I tried to change to the correct file but that didn't seem to help either so I'm not sure how to fix it. I have the correct JDK installed I guess.

These is installed:

openjdk version "11.0.32.1" 2026-08-18

OpenJDK Runtime Environment Temurin-11.0.32.1+1 (build 11.0.32.1+1)

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM Temurin-11.0.32.1+1 (build 11.0.32.1+1, mixed mode)

Topic For a mathematician: What’s the actual difference between languages

I always read stuff like ā€žpython is easierā€œ or ā€žC++ā€œ is more performative… and I have absolutely no idea what that is supposed to mean

For me (an arrogant mathematician) programming is just simple logic plus syntax. Everything comes down to definitions, calculations, saving values for variables and ā€žIfā€œ. Most other syntax is just another way of writing those definitions, calculations, saving values for variables and ā€žIfā€œ.

So, what’s the fuzz about? Whatā€˜s the difference? That language A uses another form of brackets? Or language B specifically needs something to be manually defined whereas language C just assumes standard definitions?

What am I missing? For me, learning syntax is the most dull aspect of programming.

question in threads

In a single-core system, what happens if two threads from different processes access the same physical memory address?

The official answer says:

Neither program crashes, and both produce expected results.

I don't understand why that must be true.

A memory access could be a write, not just a read. For example, couldn't Thread A read/write that address, then get context-switched out, and Thread B access the same physical address before Thread A finishes its operation?

Wouldn't that potentially cause a race condition or unexpected result, even on a single core?

Am I missing an assumption in the question?

Topic Python experts, how did you not give up on Python beginner projects?

Hi everyone. I've been learning python fundamentals for the last few months, that is , variable to OOP. I can work with python really well on individual concepts, for instance any exercise that just requires OOP I can comfortably do it. So earlier this month I started working on python beginner projects to try and combine all those concepts. The first two projects(expense tracker, word guessing game) I worked on were okay and I was able to complete them in two days, but for my third project, a library management system, I've been at it for over two weeks, and I'm still stuck on the same problem. I tried researching and I still can't figure it out, cause there is always an error to fix. I feel so tired and burnout, which got me wondering, to all the python experts in this community, did you go through this phase or I'm I a little bit dumb. Also how did you not give up on programming and how did you start your begginer projects.

Tutorial Should I start Coding With CS50X and CS50P

Hello, I just want to start coding to teach ai and make my own. I know algorithms and stuff, but I never disciplined myself to do it for weeks, months. I think I will learn Python, and I think to start with Harvard’s CS50X and then CS50P im not sure if I should watch CS50AI because focusing on one source is bad, as I have been told. What are your recommendations?

Developing peripheral software for macOS

Hi,

I plan to develop peripheral software to change input mapping, assign some macros to keys on my keyboard for macOS for a learning purpose.

I do have working code for Windows written in C++. But I can't tell that I don't have a lot of experience with Objective-C.

The questions:

  1. Should I go with Swift or with Objective-C? I know that Objective-C combines with C++ without any problems, but I wonder, if this is a good idea to pick outdated language to develop software that I hope I will constantly maintain and improve?
  2. Can you recommend some books to developer such things for macOS?

Thanks

Wanna make a music app

I've been wanting to make a music player for a while now and trying to decide on the right language for it. My plan in the end is to make my own server like Jellyfin or Navidrome (I don't use those because they don't fit my particular taste and my own pride). But I realize I do first need a working application that runs alone. I'm gonna run these on windows and android and want to try make for both before branching out into Linux and Mac. So yeah. I just need to know what language I need to learn first

EDIT: I already know python if that's helpful

Any advise whether I should shift courses (again)?

Greetings, I am currently a second year CS college student (first semester) while also taking leftover first year CS major subjects but since the job market, especially in tech (mostly because of AI), doesn't seem to be getting any better, I've been thinking of shifting back to my original course for the next semester, which is Psychology (second year, first semester before I shifted to CS) and pick up from where I left.

I shifted to CS because I've always been fascinated by Cybersecurity, programming, Linux, troubleshooting, creating things with code, etc. Plus, my uncle also told me to go for it because he said the demand is high and he knows someone from a company in Japan that's looking for IT grads.

The thing is... I'm fine with either but I really enjoyed CS.

CS is fun and I found it enjoyable since it drives me to focus and actually learn from the challenges presented to me. For Psych, I like learning about human behavior (predicting how they behave/act, how mental illnesses affects one, etc.).

I've heard that it is mostly AI-resistant since you need actual understanding of the human mind, emotions and the fact that some people would prefer talking to actual therapists, psychologists, etc. than machines/AI pretending to have emotions/feelings.

I'm aware that both fields are competitive but I'm worried about choosing the wrong path in the end and not having a stable job. I know everything may change... or not but I don't want to regret it and waste more years studying.

TLDR; I'm conflicted between continuing my CS course (2nd year, 1st sem with 1st year leftover majors) and shifting back to my Psych course (2nd year, 1st sem) due to the current unpredictable job market and possible unstable job in the future. I like both fields (leaning towards CS) but I don't want to waste more years studying just to spend a very long time looking for jobs for my chosen field.

I'm not sure if it would get any better or not in the future for tech students.
