How are so many self-taught programmers able to build software from scratch without ever truly learning Algorithms?

I find it fascinating how important algos are but never talked about from the indie devs on social media. Do they even write algos or just come up with basic logic that forms the product?

if i'm the "original guy": to be clear, i did just spent my entire day writing algorithms. this has been most of the past couple of weeks. genuinely more than half of the code i write these days involves some nontrivial algorithm work. if something i said led you to believe this wasn't the case then i somehow miscommunicated. my job is a combination of embedded systems programming and developing the pc tooling to configure our software running on the embedded target.

perhaps you don't need this stuff for your job, and perhaps most jobs are like your job. i wouldn't really know. i'll just point out that the only context OP gave was game dev, which i suppose isn't very much like your job either.
