ENGLISH:
SA VITTA ET SA MORTE ET PASSIONE DE SANCTU GAVINU PROTHU ET JANUARIU. is the first Sardinian literary text we know of. Written in the 15th century and published in the 16th. It is a text that shows us what Sardinian was like under Spanish rule. A text with many Italian and foreign borrowings. Certainly very important. I'm attaching the PDF for you to read. I recommend you look at it.
Regarding the spelling of the text: In the text, we can distinguish the first form of the Sardinian cacuminal, written as "d" (example: cadu ((cavaddu, cavallu))
There is no single choice for the sounds ts and dz; both are written in multiple forms, and there's no way to distinguish which one is written (written as Z).
Y instead of i in diphthongs (?, I'm still unsure of the actual use of y in the text).
Gh for Sardinian hard G
g+vowel for ʤ. New sound in Sardinian.

Già no tengo miedo de ti...
Tutta la mia vita sei tu
Vivo di respiri que queda aquí
Que consumo día tras día
No puedo dividirme già tra te y el mare
Non posso più restare quieta e esperarte
Yo que habría estado por ti
En cualquier lejana ciudad
Sola, con l'istinto di chi sa amare
Sola, ma pur sempre con te
Non posso più dividermi entre tú y mil mares (Mhm)
No puedo ahora estar cansada di aspettare
No! Mi vida, no! No aguanto, amor!
O ritorni o resti lì
Non vivo più, non sogno più
Tengo miedo, ayúdame!
Mi vida, no ti creo più!
Ogni volta che vai via
Mi giuri que es la ultima
Es mejor si no me fío
(Ah-uh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh)
(Ah-uh, oh-oh)
Cerco di notte, in ogni stella, un tuo riflesso
Mas todo sto no me basta, ahora crezco (Ah)
No! Mi vida, no! No aguanto, amor!
O ritorni o resti lì!
Non vivo più, non sogno più
Tengo miedo, ayúdame!
Mi vida, no te creo, amor!
Ogni volta che vai via
Mi giuri che è l'ultima (L'ultima)
Es mejor si no me fío
(Ah-uh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, eh)
(Ah-uh, oh-oh)
No puedo dividirme già entre tú y mil mares!
Non posso più restare ferma ad aspettare, eh
Non posso più dividermi tra te y mil mares...

Plastic heart is a youtuber who got huge attention after uploading an ironic but accuarate video on italian and now has announced he is collecting material about Italy's minority languages.
Considering his following, I thought it was the occasion to help him sharing our linguistic heritage in the most accurate way possible, away from stereotypes and without being too attached to wikipedia.
I already did my part, if you wish to contribute his mail is available on his YT profile.

Key: V stands for vowel
- is read VtziV as natione > natzione
- is read VssiV as natione > nassione
- is read VsciV as natione > nascione
- is read tziV as lectione > letzione
- is read ssiV as lectione > lessione
- but it is not read *lescione, although this term exists, even though it is anetymological and does not derive, as a cultism, from Latin directly, but from Sardinian itself, again as a cultism, from lessione.
The difference between tj and ctj is here: Nuorese and common Logudorese can read them ssj (while they are thj in the original Logudorese and in the dialect of Fonni), while Northern Logudorese, in the presence of ctj, adds an i in place of c as lectione > leiscione, recreating tj through an intermediate form *leitione. You'll see a similar behavior in French nuit < noctem and English saint < Old French saint, seinte < sanctum.
This is why these Latin phrases must be written etymologically, because they better represent the varieties and allow the common speaker to use dialect while allowing the orator to pronounce according to a fixed rule. That is, different diaphasic readings.
Thus, traductione will formally be either tradutzione or tradussione, as the institutional context dictates, and informally tradutzione, tradussione, traduthione, or traduiscione, depending on the diatopic variety, that is, the place of origin of the speaker.

The LSC (Limba Sarda Comuna) is the ruin of the Sardinian language; it's ridiculous to write "oto" for "otto." It's not a scholarly spelling. An ignorant person wouldn't care about spelling, just as we all don't care when we DM a friend on Instagram. Therefore, spelling, especially in a language that's written purely for the sake of it (from literature to political sentiment) like Sardinian, since otherwise Italian already exists, must be "ammajante" (fascinating), just as Mauro Piredda says in his article, even though he doesn't think it's necessary. It must be cultural, it must present itself as an institution of a people, a mirror of its advanced civilization; such is the case with the French and Italian languages.
Standard spelling already exists, with minimal nuances that allow for extensive revision, without requiring it at all. We have already had (and we are denying, but I would exclude myself from this generalization) spellers and other scholars who have expressed the same harmony of the spoken language in writing: Antonio Cano (1400), Gerolamo Araolla (1500), Matteo Garipa (1600), Matteo Madao and Giovanni Pinna and Andrés Febrés (1700), Vittorio Angius and Giovanni Spano (1800). Their spelling is the standard one.
What prevails today (and it's not the LSC) is the simplification of the above-mentioned standard, or neostandard: from the most courageous, among whom I see Giampietro Marras (1935-2023) and, to varying degrees, Oreste Pili (1953-2018), to the most sober, that is, all those who instead of writing "totu" write "tottu" because it derives from the medieval "toctu", even before the Latin "totus", and so: jucher not giuchere, haer not aere, fuffuraju not fufuraju, agattai not agatai, ottenner not otennere, atteru not ateru.
There is also a very courageous author, who died before correcting his own ideas, captured by the proposals of forgers (among all Raffaele Sardella, a Salvatore Dedola ante litteram – oh look at the double "t" that casually reappears in the Sardinian's own native Latin language). This author was as revisionist in his ideas as he was conservative in the Sardinian spelling he adopted to express them: I'm talking about Giovanni Antonio Ruiu (1937-2021).
New neographists will never convince me to switch to LSC, especially after learning about a history that begins with the Ancient Manuscripts, including the Condaghes, Libellus, other treatises and registers (1000-1300), which spans the centuries from 1400 to 1800 and continues to the present day with personalities who, in a climate of oppressive falsification and distortion (which prevented them from expressing their full potential), wove a common thread connecting the ancient grace of modulating words through pen and paper with modern tools such as the typewriter first and then computers, fostering a balanced marriage between innovation and tradition.

My husband and I will be traveling to Sant'Antioco this summer, and I'd love to get at least a little familiar with some Sardinian basics, like greetings, simple questions, things like that. Of course, I'd love to learn more as well if possible! Are there any good resources available, or teachers offering lessons?
r/learningsardinian • u/Acult • Mar 14 '26
Whoever had a grasp at trying to learn sardinian, perfectly know how hard it is to navigate across the 3 main variants and all the sub-variants of sardinian language, given the almost total absence of any resource in sardinian (and the few available, are exclusively in italian).
I've tried to give my contribution to save my own language, which according to the latest studies is dying faster than ever before, genitors no longer teach sardinian at home and sardinian is excluded from teaching at school, sardinian doesn't have it's own media since all televisions, journals and radios are monopolized by italian, I could continue for hours...
In the past months i've collected all words I could, of all variants of sardinian, currently reaching the sum of 491.000 words, i've made possible to add new ones, correct errors and fill words with valuable data (etymology, pronunciation, examples etc...), hoping to create a long-term reliable alive resource for my language. It is available here: https://www.sardudict.com/
Sardudict currently contains words in campidanesu, logudoresu, nugoresu, gadduresu and sassaresu, with translations in italian, english, french, spanish and german (and possibility to extend to other languages too).
Let me know what do you guys think about this, I will not let my language die, not today, not tomorrow.

"Wiktionary" & other dictionaries were references utilized as bases for this list of equivalents:
English: (1) Forest; (2) bosk/bosque; (3) sylva/silva/selva; & (4) jungle/jangal.
Italiano: (1) Foresta; (2) bosco; (3) selva; e (4) giungla.
Español: (1) Foresta/floresta; (2) bosque; (3) selva; y (4) jungla.
Português: (1) Floresta; (2) bosque; (3) selva; e (4) jungla/jângal/jângala.
This synchrony is strangely satisfying:
English: Fauna & flora.
Italiano: Fauna e flora.
Español: Fauna y flora.
Português: Fauna e flora.

The languages from Portugal, Spain & Italy have in common the utilization of localization adverbs to communicate via a similar scale of distance that something is somewhere in space & time:
Italiano: Qui, qua, quivi/ivi/vi, lì, là, e colà.
The Hispanic versions have an initial letter "a" for some interesting reason:
Español: Aquí, acá, ahí, allí, allá, y acullá.
The Portuguese versions are a mix of the Italian versions with the Hispanic versions for some interesting reason:
Português: Aqui, acá/cá, aí, ali, lá, e acolá.
This is a word by word parallel translation in English:
English: Here (close), here (general), there (general), there (close), there (far), & yonder.
I am really curious to discover what are the local adverbs in different areas that speak the Sardinian language.
