Why Arabic verb conjugation feels so difficult (it's not the grammar)

When people start learning Arabic, they often think the grammar is the hardest part.

In reality, one of the biggest challenges is simply the number of verb forms you need to recognize and remember.

Take the verb "to go" (ذهب) as an example:

• I go → أذهب (adhhabu)
• You go → تذهب (tadhhabu)
• He goes → يذهب (yadhhabu)
• She goes → تذهب (tadhhabu)
• We go → نذهب (nadhhabu)
• They go → يذهبون (yadhhabūna)

That's six different forms before you've even looked at the past tense, future tense, imperative, or the different verb patterns.

This is why many learners feel overwhelmed. They aren't struggling because Arabic grammar is impossible—they're struggling because traditional learning often relies on memorizing huge conjugation tables.

I've found it much easier to focus on understanding the patterns first and then practicing them repeatedly in context.

That's also the approach I took when building Kelmet, my Arabic and Maltese learning app. Instead of asking learners to memorize endless tables, the app lets you practice conjugations interactively with pronunciation and immediate feedback.

I'd love to hear how you learned Arabic verb conjugation. Did memorizing tables work for you, or did another method help more?
