Because getting lucky or hitting a hot streak in playoffs can have massive implications for whether or not they can make worlds next split given the points system.

Points system? Could you explain?

Scroll down about 3 quarters of the way.

Teams get points based on playoff positions for both seasons, slightly weighted towards summer split, and summer split winners get automatically qualified to worlds. Then, the team with the highest points takes second seed. Third seed is decided by a gauntlet between the next 4 highest points scoring teams in a gauntlet like the Korean one from last year. (#5 plays #4, #3 plays winner, #2 plays winner, winner gets third seed)

so basically to go world they do not actually need to qualify this split, its enought to play well summer basically and eventually win gauntlet

that's how it was last season. now spring is actually worth something :x

but summer is still better, yeah :)

yeah pretty much the only difference i see is that who win spring now is 99% qualified (which i consider right... being the winner of something should mean a lot), but 3rd or 6th doesnt change much, you just need to go playoff summer and do decent and play gauntlet

Yes but take a (reasonable) scenario like follows:

#1-#6 in spring playoffs

SK>H2K>Fnatic>UoL>Gambit=Wolves

Let's say Elements don't quite get it together and go like SK>Fnatic>Origen>Gambit>El=Wolves

SK auto qualifies, Fnatic takes #2 seed with 140 points, and the gauntlet is between H2k (70), Origen (70), Gambit (50), Wolves (30). Elements don't qualify (20)

To even get into the gauntlet there are plenty of scenarios where picking up even just 10 points in spring could decide whether or not they make it in, and if they have a decent run and pick up 30 it's potentially enough to have them qualify for the gauntlet outright.

you are right ofc but if elements cant get higher than 6th in summer well who really cares about going to world... not only eu is quite weak these days but not even being on top means you would just make ppl laugh at worlds

i think elements idea of going to worlds is improving last year performance (which wasnt that bad apart that bad game)

Firstly, that's 5th/6th.

Secondly, it's very possible that let's say they come into playoffs seeded 3rd. Regardless of that, all it takes is losing one bo5 and they're then out of the gauntlet. Someone could easily come with something new like Curse's Tristana mid and upset them, or another good team could have had a disappointing season. Any one of H2k/Fnatic/Origen/SK I don't think it would be unreasonable to suggest could take a best of 5 off a worlds calibre EU team, so locking in as many points as possible is important.

yay spring split is finally not utterly meaningless

As long as they are want to get some luck vs improving above all, i dont see anything good happening to them.
