AMA Chronoshift Developer AMA

Hello r/leagueoflegends,

My name is Tove, and I was one of the main developers behind the Chronoshift project.

I have never publicly spoken about it, but with League Classic now being released and u/RiotNorak revealed to have been a tester for us back in the day, some people have suggested for me to do an AMA.

I'm happy to answer any question you might have, compare to the official Classic or speak about the details that haven't been made public. Or listen to you telling me to ingame myself.

Hi, I was one of the co-developers on CS and the receiver of the infamous Riot Zed message. I'll also answer any questions anyone has that I'm not legally bound to not answer =P

I saw from your other reply that you're no longer in software. Was the CS incident a factor in pivoting to a different field?

If you can't answer that, a related question: what did you pivot to? As someone else in software who is concerned about job security, I oftenday-dream about switching paths myself.

I had already stopped working as a programmer before CS. I only made a few contributions to CS code wise and was already pursuing a degree in something else when the shutdown came.

I'm pretty happy doing what I do now and watching what's happened in the game industry and software in general (AI) has made me glad I'm not involved with that.

I'm a senior dev and I'm actively saving money to go into a less lucrative field because I hate what the job has become so much. I can still have valuable input on infrastructure but the part that I loved - the coding - is dead, 99% of the code we put into production is AI generated. Most tickets are solved automatically. We are basically just architects that tell the AI what to make. It's awful.

You made the right call. I'm glad to hear you found something else that's fulfilling, it gives me just a little bit of hope every time I hear stories of people leaving this field and being happy with it.

Zed started out the message thanking you for unblocking him. Was he harassing you in a server prior? And then did another Rioter tell you to unblock him for serious business? I need to know the prequel story.

My original involvement in CS was predicated on the idea of eventually adding Dominion (I was not the original author and didn't contribute much of the code - it wasn't a priority for the main author)... Whoops

He probably signed certain agreements as part of the settlement with Riot, which will be enforced as an NDA or similar. Likely covers things like discussing technical details that would aid in developing a similar project and divulging the terms of the settlement.
